American Bully health overview

The big picture

Screening results

Most American Bullies whose hearts are checked get normal results.

The one condition the breed is known to be prone to is hip dysplasia, and it is easier to manage when you plan for it from puppyhood.

Everyday habits

A few everyday habits do a lot of the work.

  • Keep your Bully lean, since weight control is key to managing hip dysplasia.
  • Favor gentle, controlled play over hard running and jumping while the joints grow.
  • Watch it closely in hot weather, because heat tolerance depends on each dog's muzzle and body condition.

Common American Bully health conditions

Worth knowing

This list is not exhaustive or official. Keep asking your veterinarian as your puppy grows.

01

Hips and elbows

Hip dysplasia is a hip joint that has not developed normally.

What you might notice

Hip X-rays show how the joint has formed, and the PennHIP method works from 16 weeks of age.

What you can do

Keep your Bully lean, because weight control is key to managing it. Elbows: elbow X-rays are part of the breed's OFA health program (CHIC), and controlled play while the joints grow is the everyday step that helps.

02

Breathing and heat

Both breed standards call for a muzzle long enough for normal breathing.

What you might notice

How well a Bully copes with heat depends on its own muzzle and body condition.

What you can do

Watch your Bully closely in hot weather and keep it lean. Before travel, the vet checks how open the nostrils are, the breathing rate and any coughing or congestion.

03

Teeth and bite

Missing teeth and an uneven bite, overshot or undershot, turn up in some American Bullies.

What you might notice

A vet can check the bite and count the teeth in a young puppy.

What you can do

The Veterinary Health Report records the mouth check, and your own vet looks again at puppy visits.

04

Skin (ichthyosis)

Ichthyosis is a skin condition caused by a genetic mutation that keeps the outer layer of skin from developing properly.

What you might notice

Look for rough skin with thick, greasy flakes that stick to the hair, most often in young dogs.

What you can do

A DNA test confirms it, and skin treatments manage it rather than cure it.

Less common conditions in the American Bully

Less common

Eyes

Cataract is listed as an eye condition presumed inherited in the breed, so cloudiness in an eye is worth a vet visit.

American Bully DNA tests

DNA tests

How it works

A cheek-swab DNA test can check an American Bully for several inherited conditions, such as a scaly skin condition and two eye diseases. The list shows which tests exist, not how common each condition is.

What the tests cover

Each result is clear, carrier or at risk. Clear means no copies of the gene change. A carrier has one copy and is healthy, and that matters only for breeding. At risk means two copies and a higher chance of the condition, not a diagnosis. For one of these tests, degenerative myelopathy, an at-risk dog may never get sick, or may get sick late in life.

American Bully vet checkups

Checkups your dog will get

  • At the first puppy visits, your vet listens to the heart and checks the bite, the eyes and, in males, both testicles.
  • Your own vet completes the vaccine series, and rabies is given by a licensed vet at the age your state requires.
  • If there is any doubt about hearing, a hearing test (BAER) gives a definite answer from 35 days of age.
  • Once your Bully is grown, hip and elbow X-rays and an advanced heart exam can show how the joints and heart are doing.
  • A DNA panel is optional; keep any results with your dog's records.

American Bully Veterinary Health Report

What the Veterinary Health Report checks

What the exam covers →

The breeder's licensed vet checks your puppy before it goes home. The vet follows PetPay's exam standards, and the results go in your puppy's Veterinary Health Report.

  1. 1Puppies must be at least 8 weeks old and weigh at least 2 lb before they travel.
  2. 2If the vet finds something that could put your puppy at risk during travel, your puppy stays with the breeder until it's resolved.
  3. 3Problems that can be treated before travel are treated by the breeder's licensed vet first.
  4. 4Anything else the vet notes is shared with you.

Honest limits

Puppies grow and change quickly, and their immune systems are still developing, so no exam can find everything. The exam is a strong early indicator and a documented starting point that your own vet builds on.

Once your puppy is home
  • Book a first visit with your own vet.
  • Your puppy's vaccination and deworming records are separate documents that travel with your puppy.
  • Bring them, with the Veterinary Health Report, to your first visit so your vet starts from the same record.
  • Before travel, every puppy follows PetPay's vaccination and deworming schedule as far as its age allows.
  • Bordetella and corona are given at the vet's discretion, and no vaccine is given within 3 days of travel.
  • Rabies is given by a licensed vet on the schedule your state requires.
  • Your own vet completes the series.
  • Ask your vet when early hip X-rays make sense for your puppy.
  • An optional cheek-swab DNA panel can go in your puppy's records alongside the Veterinary Health Report.

Frequently asked questions about American Bully health

Frequently asked questions

The condition the breed is known to be prone to is hip dysplasia; the breed's OFA health program (CHIC) also asks for elbow X-rays. Keeping your Bully lean and favoring controlled play while it grows help you stay ahead of both.

Hip dysplasia is the condition the breed is known to be prone to, so it is worth planning for from puppyhood. Of the American Bullies whose hip X-rays were sent to OFA, about 4 in 10 had hips rated abnormal. Those ratings describe the X-rays owners chose to send in, and weight control is key to managing the condition.

Both breed standards call for a muzzle long enough for normal breathing and penalize muzzles so short they impair it. Heat tolerance still varies with each dog's muzzle and body condition, so watch yours closely in hot weather.

Ichthyosis is a skin condition caused by a genetic mutation that keeps the outer layer of skin from developing properly. A DNA test confirms it, and it is managed with skin treatments rather than cured.

Missing teeth and an uneven bite turn up in some American Bullies. In OFA's dental records, about 1 in 5 American Bullies had an abnormal result, so ask your vet to check the bite and count the teeth at puppy visits.

Cheek-swab DNA panels for the American Bully check for several inherited conditions, including a scaly skin condition (ichthyosis), two eye diseases and urinary stones. A carrier has one copy of the gene change and is healthy, and an at-risk result means a higher chance, not a diagnosis.

PennHIP hip X-rays can be taken from 16 weeks of age, if you and your vet want them. Ask your vet when to follow up with more hip X-rays as your Bully grows.
