What Are the 3 Sizes of Schnauzers?

The Miniature Schnauzer is not the only Schnauzer around! Did you know that there are three different sizes of the same dog breed? The Miniature Schnauzer stands 12-14 inches tall and weighs 11-20 pounds; the Standard Schnauzer stands 17.5-19.5 inches tall and weighs 30-50 pounds; and the Giant Schnauzer is truly a giant, coming in at 23.5-27.5 inches tall and weighing 55-85 pounds.

Despite size differences, the three varieties share similar temperaments and some of the same coloring. All three have the same distinct beards, bushy eyebrows, and lovely, bold spirits.

The History and Popularity of Miniature Schnauzer Puppies For Sale

The word "Schnauze," which means “snout” or “muzzle” in German, is the origin of the name Schnauzer. This name is fitting as it refers to the magnificent whiskers that adorn the muzzle of all Schnauzers, including the Miniature Schnauzer. These distinctive whiskers are a trademark feature of the breed and contribute to their unforgettable appearance.

You may also find you’ve been pronouncing their name incorrectly. Just like “Mozart” has a ts in the middle to make it sound like “Mot-sart” when pronouncing the German “z,” the same rule is applied in “Schnauzer” to pronounce it as “Sh-naut-ser.”

The Wire-haired Pinscher, also called the Rough Pinscher, was an early prototype of the Mini Schnauzer's origin.

Schnauzer-type dogs have been around southern Germany since medieval times. Travelers needed a dog that was big enough to guard their carts and fit in the carts as they went from village to village. As working dogs, farmers bred standard Schnauzers down to the miniature size we know and used them as barnyard ratters to keep out vermin and help around the farm. Their bold feats, determination, and obedience made them perfect for the job.

As years went by, people started breeding what is the modern-day Schnauzer by crossing the gray Wolfspitz, black German Poodles, Affenpinschers, and Wire-haired Pinschers (also called Rough Pinschers) in the 19th century.

Miniature Schnauzers have occasionally been incorporated into notable works of art, adding their distinctive charm to the world of fine art. Several famous statues, tapestries, and paintings feature Schnauzer-like dogs, including paintings by Albrecht Durer (1471-1528), a 1501 tapestry called “Crown of Thorns” by Lucas Cranach the Elder, and Rembrandt (1600s).

The Miniature Schnauzer dog breed joined the AKC in 1926 as members of the working group, just two years after they arrived in America. Miniature Schnauzers now have more registrations with the AKC than the other two varieties, coming in at #17 out of almost 200 dog breeds on the list of AKC’s Most Popular Dog Breeds of 2022

Physical Characteristics of Miniature Schnauzer Puppies

Miniature Schnauzers possess an endearing and distinctive appearance. It’s hard to mistake Miniature Schnauzer puppies for sale for any other breed (other than the 2 remaining sizes of Schnauzers, of course)! This breed is easily recognizable by its unique features such as its bushy eyebrows, wiry beard, long mustache, and longer hair on the chest, underbelly, and legs. As part of the Terrier group, Miniature Schnauzer puppies have strong, square, and sturdy bodies.

Some breeders and owners opt to crop a Miniature Schnauzer puppy’s ears, resulting in them standing straight up on top of their head, always alert. Other owners will leave the ears in a natural state, folded over and hanging with tips pointing down to the ground.

In addition, most breeders will dock a Miniature Schnauzer’s tail, as the AKC standards note the tail should be docked (a surgical process usually conducted 3-5 days after a puppy is born). The tail is then about 2-3 inches from the base to the tip.

When looking for “Miniature Schnauzer puppies for sale near me,” you will find that they have coarse and wiry coats that come in various color patterns. These include salt and pepper, solid black, black and silver, and occasionally white. When puppies are born, their coats are fairly dark and will most likely lighten and even change colors over time.

Grooming and Caring For Miniature Schnauzer Puppies For Sale

While grooming and caring for a Miniature Schnauzer puppy for sale is not difficult, it is still important to know a few things about the breed.

Miniature Schnauzer puppies for sale have a distinct double coat, with a wiry topcoat and a soft undercoat. It’s important to hand strip (pluck) hair from their ears to keep their canals free and remove any blockage. Did you know that you aren’t supposed to shave a Miniature Schnauzer? Because they have a double coat, you’ll be removing two layers of hair meant to protect the skin, and the hair will grow in a different texture.

They have a moderate shedding level, making them a good choice for individuals with allergies. Regular brushing helps minimize shedding, comb out mats, and maintain their coat’s texture.

A Miniature Schnauzer puppy's coat can be styled in different cuts, offering versatility in its appearance. Their coat can be tailored to suit individual preferences. Here are a few different grooming cuts for Miniature Schnauzers:

  • Show Cut: This is the traditional and most recognizable grooming style for Miniature Schnauzers. It involves hand-stripping the body hair to maintain the wiry texture while leaving the head, legs, and tail neatly trimmed.
  • Puppy Cut: A popular choice for pet owners, the puppy cut involves clipping the entire coat to a uniform length, typically around 1-2 inches. This style requires less maintenance and gives the dog a more casual and youthful appearance.
  • Long Pants Cut: Leaving hair longer on the legs and belly while cutting it short on the top makes your Miniature Schnauzer look like they are wearing pants.
  • Teddy Bear Cut: This style involves leaving the coat longer and rounded, resembling a teddy bear. The body is typically clipped shorter, while the head and legs are left with longer hair.
  • Modified Schnauzer Cut: In this style, the body is clipped shorter, but the head and eyebrows are left with longer hair, resembling the classic Schnauzer look.
  • Lamb Cut: This style involves clipping the coat very short all over, giving the dog a smooth and uniform appearance, similar to a lamb's coat.

Miniature Schnauzers have a lifespan of about 12 to 15 years on average, which is relatively long for a small breed. Proper care, nutrition, and regular veterinary check-ups contribute to their longevity. However, Miniature Schnauzers may experience trouble with ears, eyes, pancreatitis, diabetes, and some skin conditions.
