The History and Popularity of Pomeranian Puppies For Sale

The Pomeranian breed is derived from a German Spitz type of dog encompassing over 60 dog breeds. Spitz dogs are small-to-medium-sized dog breeds with a thick double coat for cold weather conditions, pointed ears, and a curled droopy tail known for their lively and friendly nature. Spitz dogs include working dogs such as sledding dogs from Iceland and Huskies, while several have been now bred for companion dogs, such as American Eskimo Dogs, the Alaskan Klee Kai, and of course, our beloved Pomeranians.

The Baltic region called Pomerania in northwest Poland and northeast Germany is where the breed gets its name. It’s not thought that they are from this region necessarily, but it’s where the breed transformation from a medium-sized dog to a smaller dog occurred before they entered royal courts. The Pomeranian is called the Zwergspitz in Germany, meaning “dwarf spitz.”

The earliest known mention specifically of a Pomeranian is from a diary entry on November 2, 1764. Famous biography writer James Boswell mentioned, “The Frenchman had a Pomeranian dog named Pomer whom he was mighty fond of,” recording instances of meeting people on his tour of Germany and Switzerland. These Pomeranians were much bigger than the Toy size of modern times, weighing 30-50 lbs. but with the same physical characteristics as the mane and curled tail.

Pomeranians were popular companions and lapdogs for royalty, especially for Queen Victoria, Queen Charlotte’s granddaughter. During her reign, she preferred the 6-12 lb. smaller Pomeranian variety, and Queen Victoria is responsible for the popularity of breeding Pomeranians down to the Toy size we know today. She introduced several colors and types of Pomeranians from different countries to produce robust Pomeranians popular with other royals and the high class. It’s also said that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Napoleon I, King George IV, Marie Antoinette, and Emile Zola also owned Pomeranians.

Pomeranian puppies for sale were very popular subjects for art during the 1700s and 1800s. Because so many royal portraits were painted during this time, it’s only natural the little lap dogs be included as well. You can see a record over time of the Pomeranian breed getting smaller and smaller. Painter Sir Thomas Gainsborough in particular depicts the larger size Pomeranian in his paintings. Jean-Marc Nattier also painted a smaller Pomeranian of a 1758 portrait of French princess Madame Adélaïde.

Pomeranians made their way across the pond to the United States at the turn of the century. The American Kennel Club welcomed the breed to the Toy category in 1900. Subsequently, in 1911, the American Pomeranian Club organized the first specialty show, and they won the Westminster Dog Show in their category in 1926. However, it took until 1988 to win Best in Show!

One interesting historical fact is that Pomeranians were two of the three dogs total saved from the sinking of the RMS Titanic in Lifeboats #6 and #7.

While not as popular as some other dog breeds in other countries, the Pomeranian has thrived in the United States. Today, they are #23 out of 199 dog breeds on the AKC’s Most Popular Dog Breeds of 2022

Pomeranian puppies for sale are an extremely popular choice for those who live in more urban areas with smaller living spaces due to their size and versatility. They continue to charm people around the world with their silly, cute antics all over various social media platforms.

What Are Some Red Flags When Looking For Pomeranian Puppies For Sale?

When searching for a Pomeranian puppy for sale, it's crucial to be vigilant and avoid inadvertently supporting puppy mills or falling victim to puppy scams. Here are some warning signs to watch out for:

Lack of paperwork

If the seller fails to provide a puppy contract or information about the parents' health and lineage, it's a red flag. A puppy contract outlines the responsibilities of both the buyer and breeder and ensures transparency. Without proper documentation, it's best to steer clear.

Insufficient health information

Responsible breeders typically offer a health guarantee, detailing the vaccinations and dewormings the puppy has received and when. If the seller fails to provide any health information, it raises concerns about the puppy's medical well-being.

Early separation from the mother

Pomeranian puppies should not be separated from their mother before they reach at least 8 weeks of age. If you come across sellers offering puppies that are obviously too young, it indicates a disregard for the puppy's healthy development and should be avoided.

Did you know that Pomeranian puppies for sale may need a little extra time with their breeder? Because they are so tiny, we recommend Pomeranian puppies stay with their mother until they reach 12 weeks to ensure they regulate their blood sugars and are robust enough to travel to your loving arms.

Dubious payment methods

Be wary if the seller insists on unsecured payment methods like gift cards, money orders, or cash. Reputable breeders prioritize secure payment transactions and often utilize platforms like PetPay to prevent fraudulent activities. If the payment process seems sketchy, it's best to walk away.

By staying vigilant and recognizing these red flags, you can protect yourself from unscrupulous sellers and ensure that you acquire a  from a reputable and caring source. Remember, responsible breeders prioritize the health and well-being of their puppies, providing necessary paperwork, health guarantees, and secure payment methods.
