3…2…1…HAPPY NEW YEAR!

As the saxophone notes of Auld Lang Syne float over the crowded street littered with noisemakers and streamers, strangers turn to each other and give hugs, hopeful of what 2025 will bring. Some of us know right away what resolutions we want to make, but for others, it’s not so apparent. What went right last year, and what would you have done differently? Do you want to be a better friend, remain mindful and centered, or get in shape? Reflecting on your New Year’s resolutions can help keep you grounded as you confidently (and perhaps nervously) enter 2025.

Our pets are an inspiration to us, teaching us about unconditional love, companionship, and pure joy. Why not look to your puppy for New Year’s resolution ideas? Here are some New Year’s resolutions inspired by dogs to help you have the best year yet in 2025!

New Year’s Resolution Ideas Based on Dog Breeds

Whether we are encouraged to look at things from a new perspective, slow down and enjoy the finer things in life, or strengthen relationships, our cute puppies can inspire all sorts of amazing changes that will truly make an impact in your life in 2025. Here are ways your dog can help you with your New Year’s resolutions to see what lessons we can take away from our precious puppies this year.

Speak your truth like a Siberian Husky

Siberian Huskies are playful, mischievous, hard-working dogs whose impressive stamina and athleticism require lots of exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy. These spirited dogs like to “tell” you how they’re feeling with hilarious, loud vocalizations like howling and even making human-like noises. Siberian Huskies are loyal to their families and love being part of the pack, so they have plenty to talk about with their buddies! “Sing me the song of your people!” they howl.

Siberian Huskies have no issues telling anyone around what they think! While their delivery may show their feisty personalities, they still have the courage to speak their minds. Like Siberian Huskies, we should be confident in ourselves to speak up when it matters and let our voices be heard in 2025.

Get in shape with a Border Collie

Border Collie puppies possess the “triple A” threat: Affectionate, athletic, and agile. These working dogs will go hard herding sheep, caring for livestock, and being just as present while hanging out with the family. A Border Collie is one of the smartest dogs in the world – A Border Collie named Chase even learned to recognize over 1,000 words and simple sentences. They consistently earn top titles in Agility competitions worldwide thanks to their impressive athleticism and ability to follow directions.

We should all take inspiration from a Border Collie to stay active every day. That doesn’t mean you have to become a powerlifter or start training to run a marathon on January 1! Getting in some movement each day helps your physical fitness and is also great for your mental health. Lace up those shoes and start by walking your dog for the first walk of 2025! Now to only keep up that active habit through Dec. 31, 2025!

Be bold like a Dachshund

Also known as a Doxie, a sausage dog, a wiener dog, a weenie, a badger dog, a low rider, or a hot dog, the curious, spunky, and affectionate Dachshund is one of the most recognizable canines in the world thanks to its funny-shaped long, short body. Dachshunds have three types of coats: Smooth or Short-haired, Wire-haired, and Long-haired. Mini Dachshunds, Tweenie Dachshunds, and Dachshunds are all the same breed but come in different sizes.

While Dachshunds may be small and barely knee-high to a grasshopper, be sure not to mention that around them! They are convinced they’re a big dog trapped in such a small package. Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt badgers and other vermin, so they’re programmed to go exactly after what they want without fear of claws, teeth, or other harm. We can all take inspiration from the Dachshund to be bold and have no fear when pursuing our 2025 goals this year.

Seek out knowledge like a Bloodhound

Bloodhound puppies are impressive to look at due to their hanging jowls, long, velvety ears, and super sniffing abilities. Their easy-going nature and friendly disposition make them fantastic pets for families with children. Bloodhounds are gentle, sociable, and affectionate dogs, although you may not like all the drool that gets on your clothes after a big hug!

However, the Bloodhound has a superpower other dogs do not, as they have one of the highest numbers of olfactory receptors, allowing them to have an amazing ability to detect even the smallest amount of scent. Combined with their stubborn nature, a Bloodhound will seek out the scent above anything else and be relentless in their pursuit until they reach their target. Like Bloodhounds, we should seek new knowledge to capture the essence of what we found and take off in pursuit of the next enriching idea once we’ve absorbed the information.

Keep your mind busy like an Australian Shepherd

Bursting with energy, intelligence, and gusto, Australian Shepherds (also called Aussies) have incredible work ethics and the ability to play all day. These herding dogs do best when given a “job” to do and love playing with children. Australian Shepherds are highly trainable and very intelligent. They come in three sizes: Toy Australian Shepherds, Mini Australian Shepherds, and Standard Australian Shepherds.

Regardless of size, an Australian Shepherd’s brain never stops going, just like the Energizer Bunny! If they do not have something to occupy their attention with mentally stimulating brain games for dogs, they will make up their own fun, something that’s not always your definition of fun! Humans get bored, too. However, engaging in and learning new activities can help our brains as we age. Keeping your mind sharp builds neuroplasticity, the ability of your brain to form new connections. Always stay mentally busy and sharp like an Australian Shepherd, and stay aware of your brain’s health as you age one year older in 2025.

Take up space like a Great Dane

Great Danes are one of the largest dog breeds on the planet, growing 32+ in. tall and weighing 175+ lbs. These gentle giants love lounging on the couch and hanging out with the family. They think they are lap dogs despite their huge size. Great Danes love pleasing their owners and have an easy-going temperament with no aggressive bone to be found in those big bodies.

Take up space in 2025 just like a Great Dane. They don’t hide in the corner – they take the spot they want on the couch, even if it’s sprawled out over your lap. A Great Dane won’t make a big deal of it; he will just go about his way while being friendly to everyone. Taking up space is a way to assert yourself confidently while acting kindly.

Spend quality time with friends like a Maltese

A Maltese dog is a small, elegant toy dog breed known for its long, silky white coat and lively personality. Originating in the Mediterranean, Maltese were one of the first dogs to be bred specifically for companionship instead of having another purpose. Maltese dogs are affectionate and friendly and often form strong bonds with their owners. They also come in a teacup size for those wanting an even tinier companion.

Maltese love nothing more than spending quality time with their companions. Every day is, “What are we going to do together today?” Whether you plan a party or just go run errands with a friend, incorporate your treasured friendships into your daily plans to “fill your cup” with human companionship. Maltese dogs are always happy to see you, so transfer that warm energy into your friendships for a rich 2025.

Be fashion-forward like an Italian Greyhound

Italian Greyhounds, also called Iggys, are a unique and endearing breed with a rich history, delicate physique, and a gentle disposition. Contrary to popular belief, they are not just miniature Greyhounds but a separate dog breed. Their combination of elegance and athleticism along with their affectionate nature make Italian Greyhounds popular pets for those looking for a companion dog.

Italian Greyhounds have sleek, shiny single coats that don’t do much to protect their skin and bones from cold weather. For this reason, Italian Greyhounds need to wear warm sweaters, coats, and other accessories to keep them warm in the colder months. Likewise, you should take a look at your current wardrobe and welcome some pizzazz with new pieces for your personal style. Start off 2025 looking and feeling great, much like Tika the Iggy does with her fabulous fashion collection.

Make people laugh like a Boxer

Boxers are exuberant, enthusiastic large dogs that love to play. Boxers are loyal, affectionate, and intelligent canine companions who are open to strangers and are always trying to make new friends. Historically, Boxers have had many jobs over the years as working dogs, serving as cattle dogs, watchdogs, police dogs, guide dogs, athletes, protection dogs, and war dogs. However, they also have one more job – Class Clown!

All you have to do is take one look at a Boxer, and you will burst out laughing! Their square faces, big eyes, and hilarious underbites give them a comical advantage before they even start their shenanigans! Their silly expressions and antics will keep owners laughing. For humans, laughing brings out those feel-good hormones and automatically lifts people’s moods. Try making people laugh in 2025 for a positive attitude. Boxers love having a good time and will want to join in on the fun, too!

Meet new people like a Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are one of the most beloved and popular dog breeds in the world! They're known for their friendly and gentle temperament, intelligence, and loyalty. Their beautiful fur ranges from cream (English Cream Golden Retrievers) to deep mahogany. Golden Retrievers are active family companions and make wonderful therapy and service dogs due to their perceptive nature and trainability.

Golden Retrievers have two facets of their personality: Friends they’ve met, and friends they don’t know yet. Take the lead of a Golden Retriever and view everyone you meet as a possible friend you haven’t met yet. This approach will help you keep your options open and consider people different from you who may not have been otherwise if you don’t put yourself out there like Goldens do. You can also strengthen your bond with your current friendships for a fulfilling personal life.
