“What a unique dog you have there! What is it? Is it a Pug or a Beagle?”

You swell up with pride when you say, “Why, that’s my Puggle!”

“What a funny name – is this the dog a Muggle has from Harry Potter? And what a gorgeous dog!” says your new friend.

While no one is waving a magic wand and saying spells to make mixed dog breeds magically appear, it may seem that way when looking at all the fun hybrid mixed names out there. A crossbreed dog, often called a designer dog, a hybrid dog, or a mixed breed dog, is a puppy resulting from breeding typically two purebred dog breeds to create a brand new breed.

Most people may automatically think of a “-doodle” or “-poo” crossbreed when thinking of mixed-breed dogs. We love doodles so much that we have dedicated an entire blog to Pawrade’s doodle ownership guide that explores these wonderful hybrids. We’ll take a look at some lesser-known mixed breeds that are waiting to be your furever best friend.

You may not realize that there are so many wonderful combinations of dog breed mixes available at Pawrade that you should consider when looking for a puppy for sale. Learn what to look for in a crossbred puppy and check out 18 hybrid designer dog breeds that make fantastic puppy companions.

Advantages of Considering a Designer Crossover Dog Breed

While of course we believe purebred dogs are amazing pets, here are some benefits of adopting a hybrid dog.

Crossbreeds can enjoy a long, healthy life

Thanks to a genetic mix of the gene pool, it is thought that mixed breeds are generally healthier than purebreds, which hold limited genetic diversity. They may also be less likely to have problems specific only to purebreds due to carrying dominant traits instead of matching recessive traits passed along from two purebred parents.

Nationwide Pet Insurance claims hold valuable data in determining the theory that mixed breeds overall experience significantly lower rates of cancer than their parent breeds. In a massive review of 1.61 million canine cancer claims, they found some interesting statistics indeed.

Their thorough review found that the relative risk for a cancer claim in all purebreds is approximately double (188.5%) that for all non-purebreds (mixed breeds and crossbreds combined). Even further, Standard Poodles and Golden Retrievers have cancer claims 3.8 times higher than their mixed offspring, and Goldendoodles are half as likely to file a claim.

Hybrid puppies can be multigenerational crosses

Not all designer dogs are a first-generation mix of purebred parents. Crossbreed dogs can also be either bred to a purebred dog or other generations of the hybrid, creating multigenerational litters.

Designer dogs could be just what you’re looking for

Another advantage of selecting a designer dog puppy for sale is you can choose a mixed breed that fits your and your family’s needs. Maybe there’s not quite the right breed you’ve come across in your dog breed research, but a hybrid dog offers exactly what you’re looking for.

Crossbreeds are unique in every way

From the coat color combination to their personalities, genetics plays a huge role in determining each unique puppy. The aim for any hybrid dog cross is to take the very best traits from each parent breed. If one dog known for its hyperactivity and athleticism is paired with a breed that is more chill and sweet, you will hopefully get a more mellow, happy version of a breed without the hyperactivity or penchant for being a permanent couch potato – but you never know which trait will dominate. That’s the fun of owning a unique hybrid dog breed!

How Can I Predict the Adult Size of My Hybrid Dog Breed?

In addition, while you can estimate the size, you’re not quite sure what size your crossbreed will be when there are notable size differences between the parent breeds. There are a few different ways to calculate the adult size of your mixed-breed puppy

Several factors go into determining a hybrid puppy’s adult weight, such as breeds combined, the sex of your puppy, whether or not your puppy is spayed or neutered, and the high-quality diet you are feeding your puppy.

If you’re wondering how big your hybrid puppy will be, try these different puppy-to-adult growth measurement methods to see which one was the most accurate!

  • Method One: Measure your puppy at 6 months old. Toy and small breeds reach 75% of their adult weight by 6 months, medium-sized puppies reach 66% of their adult weight, and large-breed puppies will be 50-60% of their adult weight.
  • Method Two: Take your puppy’s weight and divide it by its age in weeks. Then multiply that answer by 52 (because there are 52 weeks in a year). If you do some math, you can get a loose prediction. If you want to skip the pen and paper, use an online puppy weight calculator
  • Method Three: Take the average breed size of each parent, add them together, and divide by 2.
  • Method Four: Conduct some research, whether that’s online with designer dog clubs or asking your friends with the same hybrid as you have.

Can I Register My Hybrid Mixed Dog Breed?

Some people may only know about the American Kennel Club (AKC), which registers 200 purebred dog breeds. But just because the AKC doesn’t recognize designer dogs doesn’t mean they can’t be registered!

Depending on your crossbreed, here are some kennel clubs and registries that accept designer dogs.

Where Can I Find a Trustworthy Designer Dog Breeder?

Not only do reputable hybrid dog breeders understand the nuances and health concerns of each breed but they also carefully select the parents based on their individual traits and personalities.

Puppy mills do not care about hand-selecting and thoughtfully breeding mixed dogs. They just want to make a quick buck and capitalize on the popularity of designer dogs. Puppy mill dogs have terrible lives and live in unsanitary conditions, do not receive proper health care, and do not receive proper socialization with other pups, their mother, and human interaction.

Puppy scammers may also try to sell you a dog and claim it’s one particular hybrid dog breed when in reality, they will say anything to get you to purchase any random puppy. They won’t offer any papers with parent or health information and certainly won’t produce a comprehensive puppy contract or health guarantee.

Luckily for you, we know just the place to find a crossbred puppy – Pawrade!
