Poodle hybrid crossbreeds are popular because of their friendly and social personalities, making them excellent family pets. Doodle mixes are often intelligent and easy to train, and they typically have a moderate energy level, making them suitable for both active and more laid-back households.

Ready to explore what it means to be a proud Doodle owner? Check out our comprehensive guide to doodle ownership to see if Doodle puppies for sale are right for you.

What is a Doodle?

A doodle mix hybrid crossbreed dog, also known as a designer dog, is a mixed breed dog that is the result of breeding two different purebred dogs. A responsible doodle breeder aims to pair parents that exhibit the very best of their breeds’ traits in looks, health, and personality, ultimately creating a furry friend with the best top features of their lineage.

The most popular types of doodle mixes are Labradoodles (Labrador Retriever and Poodle mix), Goldendoodles (Golden Retriever and Poodle mix), and Bernedoodles (Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle mix), all in Mini or Standard size. However, there is a whole Doodle world out there as a result of crossing a Poodle with a huge variety of parent breeds, some of which you might not have even heard of!

Doodle ownership is increasing

Doodle crossbreeds are some of the most popular puppies for sale sought by all sorts of people wanting to add a puppy to their family. For example, according to Rover.com, “the Goldendoodle jumped up in ranking from number nine in 2020 to the top five in 2021, with doodle ownership doubling in the U.S. since 2016.”

In addition, Nationwide Pet Insurance has noticed doodle ownership has increased significantly in major cities, citing that the metro areas of Miami are up 466%, Houston is up 464%, Los Angeles is up 302%, and Orlando and Tampa/St. Petersburg are up 337%.

History of doodle breeding

Breeding doodle designer dogs is a relatively recent phenomenon that began in the late 20th century. The US Military began experimenting with doodles in the 1960s to combine intelligent breeds with Poodles such as German Shepherds and Sheepdogs to be military police dogs. The Labradoodle was created in Australia during the 1970s by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle. The aim of this cross was to create a hypoallergenic guide dog for a vision-impaired woman whose husband was allergic to dogs.

Even today, new doodle breeds are being developed to combine traits of well-loved purebreds.

Why the Poodle Dog Breed?

Out of all the breeds out there, why is a Poodle the center of attention? There are lots of reasons why, so we’ll explore some below.

Intelligent

Poodles are considered to be one of the most intelligent dog breeds. They are known for their exceptional trainability, problem-solving skills, and ability to learn and perform complex tasks. Poodles are often used as service dogs, therapy dogs, and in various types of dog sports due to their intelligence and eagerness to please.

Hypoallergenic

Poodles are considered hypoallergenic dogs because they have a curly, non-shedding coat that produces less dander and allergens than other dog breeds. Dander is a common allergen that causes allergic reactions in many people, and it is typically produced by a dog's skin and hair. Poodles' curly coat traps dander and prevents it from spreading around the house, which can reduce allergic reactions.

Different sizes

Poodles are extremely versatile as far as size goes and come in four different recognized sizes. In order from largest to smallest, a purebred dog can be bred with a Standard Poodle, Moyen Poodle, Miniature Poodle, and Toy Poodle, creating a variety of sizes in combination with their parents’ adult weights.

Good family dogs

Poodles have a friendly and affectionate nature, and they enjoy being around children. They are playful and patient, making them well-suited for families with young children. Poodles are also known for their obedience and trainability, which makes them easy to teach and manage around children.

Service and therapy dogs

In addition to being easy to train to assist humans in need, did you know Poodles are also four-legged detectives? They have been known to detect seizures up to 45 minutes in advance and even catch changes in blood sugar levels for their human companions with diabetes. And as if that wasn't impressive enough, they can also sniff out certain types of cancer by picking up on changes in body chemistry found in sweat, urine, and skin.

All About Doodle Genetics

Doodle coloring

This may surprise some people, but not all dogs will take on their parents’ coloring. For example, Goldendoodles are not always the same color as a Golden Retriever or an English Golden Retriever. You may see a Merle Goldendoodle that is gray, black, and white, but yes – it’s still a Goldendoodle!

In addition to noticing a huge range of colors and patterns, a doodle’s coat can change color rapidly in the first year of life, which is completely normal. Dogs may change color naturally as they mature due to many factors such as genetics, hair type, losing puppy fur and changing to the adult coat, pigmentation, hormonal changes, seasonal changes, shaving, and other reasons.

Personalities & activity levels

While great breeders look for the very best traits to combine, genetics is always a surprise. Genetics can go either way by taking on more looks and personalities of one parent over the other or being a total mix of both parents.

From working to sporting to companion dogs mixed with a Poodle personality, a range of dispositions and energy levels can emerge. Some hybrids may be more high-energy than others, but all dogs need regular exercise

Hypoallergenic hair type

Another place where genetics can be a surprise is the hair texture and length of your doodle cross. Doodle hair may be long or short, and wavy, curly, or straight – it just depends on the genetics of the parent dogs and how they manifest themselves in the doodle puppy.

Doodle crosses are also extremely popular with people who suffer from allergies. Thanks to their Poodle parents, doodles are considered hypoallergenic as well. You can still have a hypoallergenic puppy with a first-generation cross, but sometimes the non-parent side will come out more than the Poodle side. No dog is guaranteed to be completely hypoallergenic; however, multi-generational crossbreeds might be a better solution if you want to ensure a more hypoallergenic puppy.

Doodle health

One interesting fact discovered by examining pet health insurance claims is that doodle crosses are “far less likely to have claims for cancer than the breeds used to create them.” This means that doodles can be even healthier than their parent breeds!

One of the most important things you can do when looking at doodles is to make sure you’re getting a doodle from a reputable breeder. Trustworthy breeders practice responsible breeding and know information about the parents. They’ve health tested each parent and only select traits they want to pass on to future generations to create healthy, well-adjusted puppies.

However, when backyard breeders crossbreed, they may not know if the parents carry undesirable genetic traits and could pass on all the health problems from sickly parents. It’s crucial to research the specific mix before bringing a doodle mix into your home. Proper care, socialization, and training are essential for the health and well-being of any dog, regardless of its breed or mix.

Making Sense of Doodle Cross Generations

F1, F1B, F2…what do all these numbers and letters mean when you’re looking for a Doodle puppy for sale? Let’s find out!

  • F1: The result of two purebred parent breeds. Ex: Golden Retriever and a Standard Poodle will result in a Goldendoodle
  • F1B: One parent is a purebred breed, and another is an F1 doodle. Example: An F1 doodle crossed back with the parent breed
  • F1BB: An F1B doodle crossed with a purebred parent
  • F2: Two F1 doodles crossed will make an F2 doodle
  • F2B: An F1 doodle crossed with an F1B doodle
  • F2BB: An F2 doodle crossed with a purebred parent
  • Multigenerational: Any F2 doodle breed or beyond crossed with another F2 doodle breed or beyond

Special Doodle Grooming Needs

Whether you do DIY dog grooming at home or book regular appointments, the bottom line is you must groom your doodle regularly. In addition to experiencing all the benefits of grooming your puppy, it’s simply part of being a responsible pet owner, especially when the life expectancy of doodles can be over a decade or more.

Grooming a doodle dog can mean extra steps and time for a professional groomer, so you’ll need to plan for both time and money. A doodle appointment may fill up extra booking slots or take 2-5 hours for a full doodle grooming session.

Professionals know which order to begin, like brushing out the coat before a bath instead of only attempting it afterward. When doodle dogs get a bath, their coat must be completely dry to prevent matting. Special conditioner or other products may be used on their coats. Lastly, the professional groomer will take a bit of time to cut the style you choose for your doodle.

Non-ethical breeding results in health problems

Because doodles are so popular, they may seem like an easy buck to make for backyard breeders or puppy mills looking for a quick transaction. If the low price is too good to be true, you’ve probably encountered your first flag of many puppy scam red flags. Always pay attention to your gut!

An unsecured puppy sale won’t come with paperwork or a puppy contract. You’ll have no idea who is responsible for certain health conditions (surprise – it will be all on you), know about the parent’s health, or even know how to contact the seller after you walk away.

In fact, buying a puppy for sale from a random social media post could even be using stolen photos. You may not even know what kind of doodle you’re actually getting since lots of them look the same when they are puppies.

Unethical scammers may sell puppies from an abhorrent, unsanitary puppy mill if you buy from a backyard breeder, a pet store, or an unsecured online manner like FB marketplace, craigslist, etc.
