A Golden Retriever dressed as a pilgrim sits next to a paper turkey

A cornucopia of abundance rests in the middle of a beautifully decorated table. A perfectly roasted turkey is surrounded by colorful side dishes. The family gathers around a long table taking turns expressing gratitude and sharing blessings from the past year.

An ideal Thanksgiving scene is something many families strive for as we celebrate tradition, friends, and family. However, there’s never a dull moment when a puppy is around!

Having a puppy at Thanksgiving dinner can be an exciting event with unanticipated situations. Perhaps your giant Great Dane puppy has tried repeatedly to take down the resting turkey from the counter. At least one pie has gone missing, and there’s a little accident right in the middle of the hallway where guests are about to arrive. You turn around, and your puppy has a poor pilgrim dangling from his mouth. Meanwhile, you catch a whiff of the pumpkin pie – oh no, it’s burnt!

A puppy brings an abundance of good (and interesting) times when family and friends gather to spend quality time with each other over a fantastic meal. Members of our Pawrade staff are no strangers to the lively atmosphere a puppy can bring to your party. Even though they may be naughty sometimes, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

We’re Thankful For Our Pawrade Pets

Our pets bring unbridled joy to our lives, and what better way to celebrate than to express gratitude toward our pets during this special holiday? At Pawrade, we have an attitude of gratitude toward our pets. Meet Pawrade staff animals and see why we’re grateful for our furbabies this Thanksgiving.

Katie Pessagno, Puppy Concierge - Finn the German Shepherd

I am thankful for my Finn because he puts smiles on everyone’s faces he meets. He is big and can be intimidating, but he makes people feel so comfortable. His ears don’t stand and bounce when he walks, giving him a goofy and fun appearance. He is so loyal and is my comfort dog. I (and my husband) are so thankful for him and what he gives to us.

Jennifer Elliott, Operations Manager - Grant the Shih Tzu

I am thankful for Grant. He brings me a ton of happiness and joy. He is like a little old man and likes to sit with me, lie with me, and walk with me. I am thankful that he got to be in my father's life right before he passed away, as he is named after my dad. I give Grant treats like apples, fresh turkey, and veggies on Thanksgiving, making him feel even more like a part of the family. I am thankful he is such a sweet, loving pup.

Peter Corso, Customer Service Lead - Bailey the Gerberian Shepsky

I am so thankful for Bailey because she makes me smile every day! She has a lot of quirks and is unlike any dog that I've ever met, but I love her dearly for her oddball behavior. She forces me to get outside for walks and remember that life doesn't always have to be so serious. Her ears get me every time!

Aurora Moss, Copywriter - Barry the French Bulldog

Every person was designed to have a companion. Puppies are comical and innocent and can turn any frown upside down. No matter how good or bad the day may have been, my boy always snuggles up right next to me, letting me know that it's always gonna be okay with him around. Quality time is the best way to show gratitude. We walk, watch TV together, dance together, and have the best bathtime routine. All in all snuggling and quality time seems to be what makes him the happiest. This will be our first Thanksgiving together. I plan to make him his own special meal with doggy-friendly Thanksgiving foods and let him have a pup cup for dessert.

Lucy Hughes, Brand Journalist - Mr. Bonejangles (Bowie) the Golden Retriever

Bowie brought a ray of sunshine to our house just as the pandemic shut down the world. He’s always making us laugh with his hilarious antics! He likes to get himself wrapped around the trampoline while trying to eat bees - we never said we were thankful for his, uh, intelligence, but we love him for who he is! Bowie is gentle with our kids and always provides a velvety soft listening ear when we’re having a bad day. Everyone needs a Golden Retriever puppy to hug – and lint brushes stashed in every room!

Shannon Gegor, Travel Manager - Waylon the Bernese Mountain Dog & Dolly Parton the Pembroke Welsh Corgi

We love to spend time giving belly rubs or petting our babies! Giving a pet a happy and healthy life and a comfortable and safe home simply feels good. Having the responsibility of taking care of an animal gives you a strong sense of purpose and importance that reaps endless rewards!

Alyssa Dean, Health First Team - Bandit the Australian Shepherd

I am thankful for my dog Bandit for many reasons. Dogs are the most loyal and unjudging being that will love you back unconditionally. He is there to brighten my day and to keep me company. Bandit seems to always be able to find ways to make me laugh! For example, when playing catch, he jumps around the yard like a bunny! To show Bandit how thankful and appreciative I am for him I make sure to spoil him whenever I get the chance, whether it is a bunch of cuddles and pets, treats, or new toys!

Regina Diaddago Assistant Sales Manager - Hulk the Olde English Bulldogge

I am thankful that I always (and I mean ALWAYS) have Hulk by my side. He supports me in everything I do and always believes in me. He never lets me feel lonely or be alone for even a second!

elizabethbrucesawyer.webp

Elizabeth Ritter,  Onboarding Specialist - Bruce and Sawyer the English Labrador Retrievers

I lost Bruce a few years back after a long battle with cancer and not long after, my husband rescued Sawyer. Funny enough, our Thanksgiving tradition has been one that only the dogs must know to be a tradition. Every year, no matter how careful we are, one whole item is stolen off the counter by the Labrador - a whole ham, a whole cake, a whole casserole - and shared between them and the other dogs of the house in a mini dog Thanksgiving.

Renee Reamy, Assistant Operations Manager - Zeus the Plott Hound/Golden Retriever mix & Athena the Aussiedoodle

I am thankful for my bond with Zeus and Athena because they don't judge, and they love being with us no matter what. My family and I show gratitude for our dogs by reciprocating their love and affection, ensuring that they are taken care of and well-fed. On Thanksgiving, we always make sure to make small plates for each pup with some leftovers of our yummy meal!

Tania Moss, Program Director - Jubles the American Pit Bull Terrier

I'm thankful for our beautiful Jibble Jables because while he's a lover, he's also a protector and will always look after his humans. He's incredibly smart and was so easy to train. He also makes great TikTok videos!

Conner McClain, Copywriter - Fili the Cat

Fili has no problem making me into his bed, and I just can't get enough! He's a gentle and loving soul and knows when his humans need love. He knows how to play rough without the use of his claws and isn't afraid of anything.

Butters_Jillian_Royalty (1).webp

Jillian Royalty, Breeder Support - Butters the Orange Tabby Cat

I am thankful for Butters ridding my house of silence. I am thankful that when I have no other reason to get out of bed, I have to get up to take care of Butters. People can show gratitude for their pets by never denying them playtime when being brought toys, even if just for one minute. This year is Butters’s first Thanksgiving, so we have no tradition yet.

Tips For Having a Great Thanksgiving With Your Puppy

We know how much preparation goes into making Thanksgiving a holiday to remember. It’s easy to forget to focus on your puppy during the hustle and bustle of getting ready for the festivities, but it’s important to take some time to make the holiday a smooth, fun experience for your canine companion.

  • Make your own Thanksgiving traditions with your dog. Watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade together, go on a post-meal walk, or give your puppy a new toy to keep them entertained while you cook.
  • Another fun dog-related thing to watch is the National Dog Show on NBC put on by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia. A whopping 205 dog breeds will compete for Best in Breed, First in Group, and the esteemed Best in Show titles.
  • Serve Thanksgiving-friendly foods that are safe for dogs. Plain turkey, canned pumpkin, apples, and oats are all great choices for fall-themed dog treats. Avoid fatty poutry skin, chocolate, onions and garlic, and sweets.
  • Take a minute to make your home safe for puppies. Store cleaning supplies up high, watch any food left out where your puppy could steal it, and secure loose cords, shoes, and other items at eye-level.
  • Teach your dogs some amazing dog tricks to entertain your guests. Your puppy will love being the center of attention, and your guests will laugh over all the silly things your puppy will do for a treat.
  • Make sure your puppy is up-to-date on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention and core puppy vaccines, especially if you have another four-legged guest joining you.
  • If you’re traveling or need a doggy day care for your pup, learn how to choose a great dog sitter to fit you and your puppy’s needs.
