American Bulldog Puppies For Sale: About the Breed

American Bulldog puppies are a hardworking, versatile, and athletic dog breed fiercely loyal to their owners. Its historical roots trace back to the English Bulldog, with records suggesting that bulldogs were present in America as early as the 17th century. As immigrants arrived in the United States in the 1800s, they brought their working Bulldogs along.

Before the American Bulldog acquired its present name, it was known by different names depending on the region. Some referred to it as the White English Southern Bulldog, while in most cases, it was simply called "Bulldog."

Small farmers and ranchers found the American Bulldog to be a great asset on the farm due to its diverse skill set. This all-around working dog excelled in various tasks, such as protecting and herding livestock and catching feral pigs.

By the late 1940s, the Bulldogs approached extinction. But thanks to breeding programs set up by John D. Johnson and Alan Scott, the American Bulldog dog breed survived. From those breeders emerged two types of American Bulldogs: The Johnson (classic, bully type) or the Scott (performance or standard type). It's rare to differentiate between the two when searching for "American Bulldog puppies for sale near me," as they both fall under the breed.

Characteristics

This breed may be mistaken for American Pit Bull Terriers because of how they look, but they are not the same breed at all. An American Bulldog puppy for sale will grow to be 20-25 inches tall and weigh 60-100 pounds depending on their sex.

American Bulldog puppies have a large, square head, a powerful jawline, and a stocky, well-built body with a broad, deep chest. They can come in a variety of colors and markings including all-white or white mixed with brown, black, tan, red, and brindle.

Training

Training an American Bulldog puppy requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Due to their imposing looks, some people may automatically be wary of an American Bulldog, so it's vital you train your puppy to grow into a well-adjusted canine companion.

American Bulldog puppies for sale need ongoing, firm training to ensure they are socialized well with all animal sizes and types, children, and strangers. Grooming Needs & Care

American Bulldog puppies for sale are relatively low-maintenance and easy to groom. They have a short, single coat that does shed, but not like double-coated dogs. You will only need to brush them around once a week or every two weeks, and they'll only need a bath when they start to get that doggy odor or roll around in something dirty.

This relatively healthy dog breed can live 10-12 years. An American Bulldog puppy for sale may face a few health challenges, as hip dysplasia, obesity, and cherry eye can affect the breed.

Because they are a larger breed, it's important to feed American Bulldogs puppy food formulated for big dogs and to follow feeding instructions, as this breed tends to eat puppy food for a longer period of time than a smaller dog would.
