Boykin Spaniel Puppies for Sale

Boykin Spaniel Puppies For Sale: About the Breed

A Boykin Spaniel puppy for sale is a somewhat rare yet interesting dog breed for a few reasons: It holds the distinction of being South Carolina's state dog and is one of just a few dog breeds named after a person.

This vibrant dog breed originated from Whit Boykin's efforts in crossing American Water Spaniels, Cocker Spaniels, Springer Spaniels, and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, all with the aim of creating a waterfowl hunting companion. Boykin Spaniels were purposefully designed to fit comfortably in small boats, filling a niche where larger retrievers couldn't.

Once only known to the South Carolina area, Boykin Spaniel puppies for sale are gaining traction as they are becoming more well-known. They enjoy versatility as both a capable hunting companion and an affectionate family pet.

Characteristics

When searching for "Boykin Spaniel puppies for sale near me," you'll see they have a unique set of physical characteristics that make them stand out from other Spaniels. With a compact yet sturdy build, these dogs exhibit an athletic and agile physique with a beautiful, wavy coat coming in chocolate, liver, or chestnut. Another interesting feature of Boykin Spaniel puppies for sale is that they have webbed paws to help them swim in swamps and waterways.

They'll grow to be medium-sized dogs weighing 25-40 pounds and strike a balance between being sizable enough for outdoor activities yet still compact enough for convenience.

Their expressive eyes, usually dark and attentive, show intelligence and curiosity. The feathery ears of a Boykin Spaniel puppy for sale hang close to their heads, contributing to their attentive and alert demeanor.

Activity Level

Boykin Spaniels are hard workers that like to stay busy. Outside of their water jobs, Boykin Spaniel puppies for sale enjoy being a part of an active family. They'll need about 45-60 minutes per day of physical exercise and mental stimulation.

You don't have to be a hunter with a boat to own a Boykin Spaniel puppy for sale. However, if you aren't going to utilize their amazing hunting abilities, you'll need to provide similar levels of engagement. Their boundless energy, desire for enthusiastic play, and tireless retrieval throughout the day means you will need to be prepared to cater to their high-energy needs. Even though they'd love to go on a hike in the woods or swim in the lake with you (they can even swim like seals), they'll love snuggling with you after you tire them out – anything as long as they're with you.

Disposition

Described as being merry and eager, Boykin Spaniel puppies for sale are fantastic family companions that love their people. They show a fondness for children just like their Retriever and Spaniel relatives and want to be right in the middle of the action. The same eagerness they show out in the field is brought home as a desire to make their owners happy with the same enthusiasm.

Boykin Spaniel puppies for sale will also make you laugh with their silly antics. They're very friendly and get along well with other dogs and pets (watch out for pet birds though) and love meeting new people.

Training

Because they are sporting retriever dogs that like to please their owners, training a Boykin Spaniel puppy for sale can be extremely rewarding. They're bred to do a job well done and take pride in their doggy pursuits of waterfowl when out in the field.

Outside of specific flushing and hunting training, Boykin Spaniel puppies will do well in basic obedience classes and puppy kindergarten. Make sure to socialize them early so they can be great canine companions when you travel with them – something easy to do because of their size and merry personality.

Grooming Needs & Care

One of the standout features of a Boykin Spaniel is its beautiful coat, which is dense, wavy, and often water-resistant. The color spectrum of their coats ranges from rich chocolate to chestnut or liver hues, showcasing a variety of earthy tones. This lustrous coat not only adds to their aesthetic appeal but also provides protection during their waterfowl hunting activities.

However, because they are double-coated, they will shed year-round and blow their coats twice a year, so be prepared for all the dog fur! You can keep shedding to a minimum by regularly brushing their shiny coats and feeding them a healthy diet.

Boykin Spaniel puppies for sale can enjoy a long life of 10-15 years. Keep your Boykin Spaniel puppy healthy by keeping up with regular vet visits and watching out for dental issues, obesity, infections, dysplasia, or other health concerns.
