Brussels Griffon Puppies for Sale

Brussels Griffon For Sale: About the Breed

A Brussels Griffon, also known as Griffon Bruxellois, originated in Belgium and has a history dating back to the 19th century, when they were developed as small hunting and horse stable dogs and later gained popularity as companion pets. They were even memorialized in folk songs and referred to as "bearded dogs."

Today, Brussels Griffon puppy owners love how they prance around with an air of self-importance and enjoy their charming nature. Find out what it's like to be a Brussels Griffon puppy owner by learning about their characteristics, activity level, disposition, training, and grooming needs.

Characteristics

When you see a Brussels Griffon, you may laugh out loud because they look like they've just woken up with a permanently grumpy face. If not groomed well, their fur sticks out all around their head. They're known for their long beards and mustaches that cover their short muzzles. These tiny dogs stand 7-10 inches tall and weigh no more than 15 pounds fully grown. Even though they're small, they have sturdy bodies and walk with a purpose.

Brussels Griffon puppies can have one of two types of coats: smooth or wiry & rough. They have giant eyes that you swear may contain a person inside! They come in four colors: black/reddish brown (called belge), black and tan, red, and black and tan.

Activity Level

You may wonder, what is the activity level of a Brussels Griffon? Even though they're tiny, they have tons of energy and will run circles around you – literally. They love to play and will try to engage you in a game of fetch, even when you're tired out.

A Brussels Griffon will need about 30 minutes of exercise a day. You can achieve this with long walks, playtime in the yard, mentally stimulating games, and other playful activities.

Disposition

Brussels Griffon puppies have so much personality and confidence. They are so sure of themselves and sometimes forget they are small dogs. A Brussels Griffon will delight you with their alert, intelligent human-like expressions and loving nature.

A Brussels Griffon is highly adaptable to a variety of living situations. While they get along well with people and other animals, their sensitive personality doesn't make them the first go-to candidate for a family with very small children. They are very affectionate with their people and don't like to be separated for long periods.

Training

A Brussels Griffon puppy is very sensitive, so choosing a training method that is gentle and offers lots of praise will be the best. They are eager to please and fairly intelligent. Brussels Griffon puppies excel in dog sports, such as obedience, agility, and rally, and they also make great therapy dogs due to their nature of being a "velcro dog" and affectionate with their owners.

Grooming Needs & Care

If you're wondering, how do I groom Brussels Griffons? you'll see they do need some special attention beyond a regular bath. You'll need to keep their beards tidy by brushing them with a metal comb. You can choose to keep their face totally trimmed or leave a beard.

Like we previously mentioned, if a Brussels Griffon is not brushed regularly, their coarse hair can stick out every which way, making them look like they just rolled out of bed after riding in a car with all the windows down. For a wire coat, hand plucking/stripping is recommended to remove dead hair.
