About the Breed

Collie Puppies For Sale: About the Breed

A Collie is a herding dog breed that originated in Scotland, specifically in the region of the Scottish Highlands and the northern parts of England. The breed's exact origins are uncertain, but it is believed to have descended from the native dogs of the region, such as the Bearded Collie and the Border Collie.

Collies were primarily bred to herd sheep, and they were highly valued for their intelligence, loyalty, and agility. The breed gained widespread popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, largely due to the success of the fictional character "Lassie," a Rough Collie featured in a popular novel and subsequent movies and TV shows. Today, Collies are still used as herding and working dogs, but they are also popular as family pets and show dogs.

Overall, the Collie breed is a well-rounded, loving, and loyal companion that is well-suited for families and individuals who are active and enjoy spending time outdoors. Find out what it's like to own a Collie.

Characteristics

Collies are a medium-sized dog breed that has a thick, double coat consisting of a long, straight outer coat and a soft, dense undercoat. Their coat comes in various colors, including sable and white, tri-color, and blue merle. A Collie can either have a rough coat with longer hairs or a smooth coat with shorter hairs. There is no difference between a Rough Collie or a Smooth Collie other than their coat type.

A Collie has a dignified face with an elongated, narrow muzzle and almond-shaped bright eyes. Their small, pointy ears stand on top of their heads fairly close together. Underneath all that hair is a large, deep chest, sloping shoulder blades, and muscular hindquarters. A Collie will grow to be 50-75 lbs. and stand 22-26 in. tall.

Activity Level

If you're wondering if Collies are energetic and like to stay busy, you would be correct! Collies are known for their high energy levels and athleticism, making them great companions for outdoor activities such as hiking or running. They do best when given a "job" to do, as they are natural livestock herders and will get restless and engage in undesirable behaviors unless their energy is redirected in a positive way.

Disposition

The Collie is a breed of dog that is known for its intelligence, loyalty, and gentle disposition. They are typically friendly, affectionate, and love to be around people. Collies are also protective of their family and make excellent watchdogs.

With proper early socialization, Collies make wonderful companions for children because they are passive, protective, and gentle.

Training

Collies are very trainable and excel in obedience, agility, and herding competitions. Because they look to their owners for cues when out herding livestock, Collies are very eager to please their owners. They're such a smart breed and will take your direction quickly and happily.

A Collie can be willful and stubborn though, so starting out with the right training routine and remaining consistent will reinforce positive behavior. Keep training sessions short, frequent, and upbeat, and never end on a frustrated or negative note.

Grooming Needs & Care

You may recognize their shaggy coats and wonder what it's like to groom a Collie. They are a double-coated breed that sheds year-round and blow their coats twice a year, so maintaining all that glorious hair is something Collie owners know to expect.

Due to their thick coats, Collies require regular grooming to maintain their health and appearance. They should be brushed at least twice a week to prevent matting and tangling, with additional brushing during shedding seasons.

Bathing should be done only when necessary to avoid drying out their skin. With proper grooming and care, a Collie's coat can be a beautiful and healthy asset to this lovely breed.

Additionally, regular ear cleaning, nail trimming, and teeth brushing are essential for overall hygiene and health.
