Irish Setter Puppies for Sale

Irish Setter Puppies For Sale: About the Breed

Irish Setter puppies are lovable, enthusiastic hunting partners and equally great house buddies. These gorgeous dogs have the reputation of being one of the most beautiful dog breeds in the world. They originated in Ireland as gundogs and are a mix of English setters, spaniels, and pointers developed around the 18th century. They got their name from "setting" down on their bellies when they followed the scent of a game bird.

The first Irish Setter puppies were red and white to stand out in the field, but they were primarily bred for their rich reddish color by the 19th century. Irish Setters made their way to America in 1875 and were accepted into the AKC in 1878. Their popularity soared in the 1960s-70s thanks to the Disney movie "Big Red" starring an Irish Setter. US presidents have owned them, they serve as mascots for transportation and universities, and they even inspired a hit Beach Boys song, "Shannon."

Characteristics

Irish Setter puppies have a dignified, regal look, standing 25-27 inches tall and weighing 60-70 pounds when fully grown. Their beautiful chestnut, mahogany, or red coats are short on the top and feather out on their deep chests and long legs. An Irish Setter puppy's ears are covered in silky hair and shaped like teardrops, hanging well past their chins all the way down their necks, making it look like they have long hair like a human.

There are two versions of Irish Setters within the same breed: Show and Field Irish Setters. Most people think of Show dogs when they picture an Irish Setter puppy for sale, and they are heavier and larger with thicker and more reddish, lustrous coats. Field Irish Setters are smaller and sleeker gun dogs for more agility in the field and might be a shade of red with white markings.

Regardless of Show or Field, both types demonstrate an effortless, graceful gait since they are used to covering a wide range of countryside.

Activity Level

Irish Setter puppies have high energy levels, but they are efficient in their energy when they have a task to complete. Originally bred as hunting dogs, they possess a keen sense of smell and an innate ability to point out game. They may get caught up following a scent or chasing after small animals.

An Irish Setter puppy for sale will need quite a bit of exercise each day for about 45-60 minutes, and it's even better if they get more time. Irish Setter puppies need an active family that will provide lots of opportunities to burn out energy, both physically and mentally. They make great companions for outdoor enthusiasts and are definitely not couch potato dogs.

Disposition

Irish Setter puppies for sale are delightful to be around. They have an easy-going temperament that makes them great with other dogs and children, playing well together. They have a mischievous, inquisitive streak and will make you laugh with the silly antics they can get into.

Irish Setter puppies are bold and determined when hunting. One thing they don't necessarily excel in is being a solid watchdog. While they will bark to let you know about a strange presence, don't count on them actually defending you because they'd rather befriend a stranger rather than actually protect you.

Training

The American Kennel Club describes Irish Setter puppies for sale as being "rambunctious redheads that are big kids at heart." Their enthusiastic nature, eagerness, and love of pleasing people can make training an Irish Setter puppy for sale a rewarding experience.

Harsh training methods will fail with Irish Setter puppies. Instead, they need positive reinforcement with lots of praise. Tap into their instincts and explore field trials and other active dog sports with your Irish Setter puppy for opportunities for training and bonding.

Grooming Needs & Care

Irish Setter puppies for sale do require some regular care of their lush coats. Irish Setter puppy owners should own either a soft bristle or pin brush and a metal comb to thoroughly take care of their coats, brushing at least twice a week. Baths with gentle shampoo can be given once every few months, and proper dental, nail, ear, and eye care complete the minimal grooming process.

A responsible Irish Setter puppy owner can enjoy their canine companions for 11-15 years. While a relatively healthy dog breed, Irish Setter puppies may grow up to encounter hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat due to their large, deep chests, ear issues, and some eye disorders.
