Question 1

How big does a Toy Poodle get?

Accepted Answer

Most adult Toy Poodles weigh 4–8 lb. The breed is defined by height at the shoulder rather than by weight. Parents of Toy Poodles placed through Pawrade typically weigh 4–10 lb (fathers) and 5–9 lb (mothers).

Question 2

When is a Toy Poodle fully grown?

Accepted Answer

A Toy Poodle usually reaches its adult size at about 6–8 months, because toy breeds finish growing early. Behavior takes longer, and most dogs mature emotionally between 12 and 18 months.

Question 3

What is the difference between a toy, tiny toy and teacup Poodle?

Accepted Answer

The Toy is the smallest recognized Poodle size, and no registry recognizes a smaller one. "Teacup" and "tiny toy" are informal labels, not separate sizes.

Question 4

What is the difference between a Toy and a Miniature Poodle?

Accepted Answer

The main difference is size, since the Miniature is the next Poodle size up. Both follow one breed standard and have the same coat.

Question 5

What colors do Toy Poodles come in?

Accepted Answer

The AKC standard colors are black, white, blue, gray, silver, brown, café-au-lait, apricot, cream, red and silver beige, each as an even, solid color. Parti-color, merle and phantom coats are outside the AKC breed standard.

Question 6

Do Toy Poodle puppies change color as they grow?

Accepted Answer

Some do, because blue, silver, café-au-lait and silver beige puppies are born darker and lighten gradually. Until the color has fully cleared, the coat can show several shades at once.

Question 7

What does a Toy Poodle's coat feel like?

Accepted Answer

The Poodle has a dense, curly single coat that keeps growing. Breed standards describe its texture as harsh, or as fine and woolly, depending on the registry.

Question 8

Why are some Toy Poodle tails docked?

Accepted Answer

Docking is a matter of breed standards, and they differ. Some standards describe a docked tail, while others accept a natural tail or no longer allow docking.

Question 9

What should a Toy Poodle look like?

Accepted Answer

A Toy Poodle is square and elegant, with a long, straight muzzle, dark oval eyes and long, feathered drop ears. It moves with a light, springy trot.

Question 10

Are Toy Poodles calm, cuddly lap dogs?

Accepted Answer

Toy Poodles are loving and like to stay close, but they are not idle lap dogs. They have high energy for their size, and daily play and brain games keep them content.

Question 11

How much energy does a Toy Poodle have?

Accepted Answer

A Toy Poodle has high energy for its size and is lively and athletic. Fetch, trick training and puzzle games are favorite ways to play.

Question 12

Do Toy Poodles bark a lot?

Accepted Answer

Toy Poodles are alert and likely to bark. Early socialization, a quiet cue and daily brain games keep barking in check.

Question 13

Are Toy Poodles friendly with strangers?

Accepted Answer

Many are friendly with strangers, although some Toy Poodles stay reserved with people they do not know.

Question 14

Is a Toy Poodle a good companion for my other dog?

Accepted Answer

Usually it is, because Toy Poodles get on with other dogs and pets when they are socialized early. Most Toy Poodle litters on Pawrade meet small dogs before the puppies go home. About a third of Toy Poodle buyers on Pawrade already have another dog at home.

Question 15

Are Toy Poodles good with kids?

Accepted Answer

Toy Poodles are loving and playful with children. A dog this small is easily hurt by rough or very young children, so an adult should watch play and teach gentle handling.

Question 16

Do Toy Poodles get along with cats?

Accepted Answer

Many do, since Toy Poodles generally accept other pets when they are socialized early. Some breeders on Pawrade introduce their litters to cats before the puppies go home.

Question 17

Are Toy Poodles good travel dogs?

Accepted Answer

A Toy Poodle's small size and love of company make it an easy dog to take along, in town or in the country. Most Toy Poodle litters on Pawrade are used to car rides before they go home. Walk it on a harness, and keep it warm when you travel in cold weather.

Question 18

Are Toy Poodles good for seniors?

Accepted Answer

Often they are, since a Toy Poodle is small, suits apartment life, and a daily walk with play sessions covers its exercise. Plan for the grooming, though: brushing every day or two and a professional clip every 4–6 weeks.

Question 19

Are Toy Poodles good apartment dogs?

Accepted Answer

Toy Poodles are well suited to apartments, in town or in the country. Plan a daily walk and play sessions, and teach a quiet cue early.

Question 20

How much exercise does a Toy Poodle need?

Accepted Answer

A daily walk plus several play sessions, up to about an hour a day in all, covers a Toy Poodle's exercise. Fetch, trick training and puzzle games keep its mind busy too.

Question 21

Can a Toy Poodle be left alone while I work?

Accepted Answer

Long days alone do not suit a Toy Poodle, because it is highly social and needs close daily contact with its family.

Question 22

How do Toy Poodles handle cold weather?

Accepted Answer

The coat gives some protection, but the tiny body chills easily. Keep outings short in the cold.

Question 23

When can my Toy Poodle puppy run and jump?

Accepted Answer

Toy breeds finish growing early, usually at about 6–8 months. Until then, growth plates in the legs stay soft, so agree an exercise plan with your vet and skip hard jumping.

Question 24

Do Toy Poodles shed, and are they hypoallergenic?

Accepted Answer

Toy Poodles shed little, but no dog is truly hypoallergenic. A low-shedding Poodle may bother fewer people, but allergen levels vary from dog to dog and home to home.

Question 25

How much grooming does a Toy Poodle need?

Accepted Answer

A Toy Poodle needs a lot of grooming: brushing daily or every other day, and a professional clip about every 4–6 weeks. Most pets wear a short pet clip. Check the ears regularly and brush the teeth every day.

Question 26

Why do Poodles have such fancy haircuts?

Accepted Answer

The show clips began as a working trim for a swimming dog. The back end was shaved to help the dog swim, and hair was left over the chest and joints for warmth.

Question 27

Are Toy Poodles easy to train and housebreak?

Accepted Answer

Toy Poodles learn fast and respond best to upbeat, reward-based training. Use food, games and praise, and keep the rules the same every day. For house-training, take your puppy out first thing in the morning, last thing at night and after naps.

Question 28

How long can a Toy Poodle puppy hold its bladder?

Accepted Answer

A Toy Poodle puppy can usually hold its bladder for about as many hours as it is months old, so a 3-month-old can wait about 3 hours. Young puppies also need to go out first thing in the morning, last thing at night and after naps.

Question 29

Why did my Toy Poodle stop listening at 8 months?

Accepted Answer

Adolescence usually begins between about 6 and 8 months, and many dogs test boundaries or seem to forget their training for a while. It is a normal phase, and consistent training, patience and plenty of play and brain games help it pass.

Question 30

Can a Toy Poodle be a therapy or service dog?

Accepted Answer

Poodles work as therapy and assistance dogs, and Toy Poodles learn quickly with reward-based training. Toy Poodles can also earn AKC therapy dog titles.

Question 31

What activities do Toy Poodles enjoy?

Accepted Answer

Toy Poodles take part in obedience, rally, agility, musical canine freestyle and conformation shows. At home, fetch, trick training and puzzle games suit them well.

Question 32

At what age can a Toy Poodle puppy go home?

Accepted Answer

Puppies travel only once they are at least 8 weeks old and weigh at least 2 lb. Most Toy Poodle puppies go home at about 12 weeks, usually between 9 and 19 weeks.

Question 33

How many puppies are in a Toy Poodle litter?

Accepted Answer

Toy Poodle breeders on Pawrade report a typical litter of 3 puppies, usually between 2 and 5.

Question 34

What should I prepare before my Toy Poodle puppy comes home?

Accepted Answer

Set up a crate in a room where the family spends time, or in your bedroom at night. Buy a small body harness, a soft brush and food for small, frequent meals. Book a first vet visit, and ask for a check of the knees, eyelids, heart and baby teeth.

Question 35

What should I feed a Toy Poodle puppy?

Accepted Answer

Feed several small meals a day of a small-breed food. Very small puppies are prone to low blood sugar, so small, frequent meals matter from day one. Count treats too, and check body condition with your hands, because the coat hides weight gain.

Question 36

When should my Toy Poodle puppy start socialization and classes?

Accepted Answer

Start the day your puppy comes home, because the first 3 months are the most important time for learning that new people, places, animals and things are safe. Puppy classes can start as early as 7–8 weeks, as long as your puppy stays away from sick dogs.

Question 37

When does a Toy Poodle puppy stop teething?

Accepted Answer

A Toy Poodle puppy usually finishes teething by about 6 months, once its adult teeth are in. Rotate a few safe chew toys and supervise chewing while the teeth change. Baby teeth that stay in are more common in small breeds, so check the mouth every week until 7–8 months.

Question 38

When is a Toy Poodle puppy fully vaccinated?

Accepted Answer

The puppy vaccine series usually finishes at about 16 weeks, as your vet advises. Puppy classes can start before then, as long as your puppy stays away from sick dogs. Your puppy's vaccination and deworming records are separate documents that travel with your puppy. Bring them, with the Veterinary Health Report, to your first visit so your vet starts from the same record.

Question 39

Should I spay or neuter my Toy Poodle?

Accepted Answer

When to spay or neuter is a decision to make with your own vet, because it depends on your dog. Any baby teeth that stay in are often removed during that surgery.

Question 40

How are Pawrade Toy Poodle puppies raised before they come home?

Accepted Answer

Most Toy Poodle litters on Pawrade meet small dogs, children and everyday household sounds before the puppies go home. Breeders report socializing 92% of litters with small dogs and 79% with older children. They also report getting litters used to the vacuum cleaner (73%), music or TV (67%), pots and pans (63%) and car rides (60%). These figures come from what breeders reported for 644 litters. Keep introducing new people, places and sounds once your puppy is home, because the first 3 months are a puppy's most important time for learning they are safe.

Question 41

What is the Veterinary Health Report?

Accepted Answer

The Veterinary Health Report is the record of your Toy Poodle puppy's exam before it goes home. The breeder's licensed vet gives the puppy itself a full hands-on exam to PetPay's exam standards and writes down what they find. It gives you and your own vet a clear starting point for your puppy's care.

Question 42

Who examines my Toy Poodle puppy before it goes home?

Accepted Answer

The breeder's licensed veterinarian examines every puppy before it goes home, to PetPay's exam standards. The results are recorded in the puppy's Veterinary Health Report, and a copy travels with your puppy for your records.

Question 43

What does the exam check in a Toy Poodle?

Accepted Answer

The breeder's vet examines the whole puppy and pays close attention to a few things that matter in Toy Poodles. The vet feels both knees, looks at the eyes for extra lashes, listens to the heart and checks the bite. In males the vet feels for both testicles, and every puppy is weighed and checked for body condition.

Question 44

Which vaccines will my Toy Poodle puppy have had?

Accepted Answer

Before travel, every puppy follows PetPay's vaccination and deworming schedule as far as its age allows: deworming at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks, and the distemper, parvo, adenovirus and parainfluenza combination shot at 6–8, 9–11 and 12–14 weeks. Bordetella and corona are given at the vet's discretion, and no vaccine is given within 3 days of travel. Rabies is given by a licensed vet on the schedule your state requires. Your own vet completes the series. Your puppy's vaccination and deworming records are separate documents that travel with your puppy. Bring them, with the Veterinary Health Report, to your first visit so your vet starts from the same record.

Question 45

What happens if the vet finds something?

Accepted Answer

If the vet finds something that could put your puppy at risk during travel, your puppy stays with the breeder until it's resolved. Problems that can be treated before travel are treated by the breeder's licensed vet first. Anything else the vet notes is shared with you.

Question 46

Why can't the exam find everything?

Accepted Answer

Puppies grow and change quickly, and their immune systems are still developing, so no single exam can find everything. In Toy Poodles, for example, signs of a hip problem called Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease can first appear from 4 months. The report is a strong early look at your puppy, and your own vet builds on it at every checkup.

Question 47

Does a Toy Poodle from Pawrade come with a health guarantee?

Accepted Answer

Every puppy comes with a health guarantee administered by PetPay, independent of the seller. The terms are on the health guarantee page.

Question 48

What do other Toy Poodle buyers say?

Accepted Answer

Toy Poodle buyers rate their Pawrade experience 4.7 out of 5 on average, from 481 reviews, and about 83% of those reviews give 5 stars.

Question 49

How much does a Toy Poodle puppy cost?

Accepted Answer

Right now, most Toy Poodle puppies on Pawrade are listed within the typical range shown on Pawrade's Toy Poodle listings. Each breeder on Pawrade sets their own price, and each puppy's listing shows it. A Toy Poodle puppy's price reflects what goes into it: its pedigree and registration, its coat and color, and the breeder's program. Every Pawrade puppy's price also includes the pre-travel exam by the breeder's licensed vet, the Veterinary Health Report and a health guarantee administered by PetPay.
