From Scotland to Hollywood: The History and Origin of Cairn Terriers

The windswept, foggy, rocky landscape of the Scottish Highlands and Isle of Skye is home to several breeds, some still with us and others extinct, that patrolled the hills for vermin, foxes, and otters. One of these small, bold terriers was the Cairn Terrier.

A Cairn Terrier’s name could not be more perfect to suit their unique working nature. A cairn is a pile of rocks and stones either occurring naturally in the craggy landscape or placed by humans as a monument or landmark. Cairns are the perfect hiding spot for vermin like mice and rats. “Terrier” translates to “earthdog.” Therefore, the “earthdog of stone piles” is a very fitting name, indeed.

The history of the Cairn Terrier spans from the Scottish highlands to Hollywood. For centuries, Cairn Terriers served as loyal hunters and farmhands, bred for their abilities and not based on looks back hundreds of years through certain clans. The major shift from farm life to companions came about as the Cairn Terrier started to be recognized by kennel clubs in the 1800s as its own breed apart from other Scotch Terriers, including the West Highland, Skye, and Scottish Terriers. Breeders like Mrs. Alastair Campbell and Mary Hawke pushed to develop Cairn Terrier breed standards and created litters to further establish a distinct Cairn Terrier, showing them at different dog shows and exhibitions to gain recognition. Their persistence led the British Kennel Club to recognize the Cairn Terrier in 1910. On May 29, 1912, The Kennel Club Committee gave the Cairn Terrier a separate register. Cairn Terriers came to America thanks to Mrs. Henry F. Price and Mrs. Byron Rodgers, and they were accepted into the American Kennel Club in 1913.

Famous Cairn Terriers

One of the most famous canines ever to grace the Silver Screen was a female Cairn Terrier named Terry in the role of “Toto,” Dorothy’s mischievous, cheeky sidekick in The Wizard of Oz. Terry starred in several movies, but her integral appearance in the movie introduced the Cairn Terrier to generations as part of the fabric of 20th-century American culture. With their wiry coat, expressive eyes, and charisma, it’s no surprise Cairn Terriers are ideal dogs for the big screen.

Several hilariously cute Cairn Terriers have their own social media channels, delighting followers with their silly antics, lively personalities, and constant shenanigans experienced when living with Cairn Terrier puppies.

What’s the Personality Like of Cairn Terrier Puppies?

There is never a dull or sad moment when a Cairn Terrier puppy is around, that’s for sure! Cairn Terrier puppies are full of personality and are courageous, cheerful, and busy. Their scrappy spirit and happy-go-lucky attitude make them a joy to be around.

Cairn Terrier puppies are a great addition to family life. They form strong bonds with their families and crave being a part of family activities. They will need to feel included as a pack member to feel loved. Cairn Terrier puppies are great with children when socialized early, making a lively playmate for little ones. Be sure to supervise interactions due to the small size of a Cairn Terrier puppy.

Like most terriers, Cairn Terrier puppies are bold, inquisitive, and persistent with not a shy bone in their little bodies. They are always alert and love to investigate something (or someone) new.

What Does a Cairn Terrier Puppy Look Like?

Cairn Terriers may be small at just 13-16 lbs. and 9-10 in. tall, but they are by no means delicate. Their rugged, compact build is made of sturdy muscles, short legs, a broad head, an intelligent expression, and a pointed tail. As adults, their triangular ears will fully stand up on the tops of their little heads with the appearance they are always listening and alert.

Southpaws

One fun fact about Cairn Terrier puppies is that they favor their left paw as their dominant paw. That’s not the only interesting thing about their paws. Cairn Terriers have wide, well-padded front paws that are bigger than their back paws. This adapted feature allowed them to have an advantage when digging out their prey.

Color-changing coats

Due to the wide variety of colors and patterns a Cairn Terrier’s genetics offers, the puppy you fall in love with can experience a color coat change as it grows older. This change is completely natural, so it’s best to understand this phenomenon before you are disappointed. Cairn Terriers may change color naturally as they mature due to many factors such as genetics, hair type, losing puppy fur and changing to the adult coat, pigmentation, hormonal changes, seasonal changes, shaving, etc. Color changes are expected and can occur quickly and at any time.

Grooming a Cairn Terrier

A Cairn Terrier puppy has a scruffy double coat that looks like it’s haphazardly sticking out everywhere. Their thick double coat holds a rough, weatherproof outer layer of harsh guard hairs and a downy, lofty undercoat. Rather than clipping a coat to a uniform length and risking destroying the coat’s texture, it’s best to handstrip your Cairn Terrier, plucking out clumps of dead hair to make room for new growth. Handstripping retains the coat’s texture and color and is the best way to maintain a Cairn Terrier. You can brush them a few times a week in between handstripping sessions.

In addition to taking care of their coats, a Cairn Terrier will need a few more grooming considerations. Keep their nails trimmed for proper paw care, their teeth clean for good puppy oral hygiene, and check their eyes, ears, and skin for any irritation or infection.

Exercise and Training Needs of Cairn Terrier Puppies

If Toto could follow the Yellow Brick Road, then all Cairn Terrier puppies must be easy to train just like in the movies, right?

Well…you can’t compare a highly trained dog actor to your experience with your new Cairn Terrier puppy when she comes home. But what you can do is learn everything about training a Cairn Terrier puppy to be prepared for a great experience.

While training Cairn Terrier puppies can be rewarding, they need consistent guidance with firm boundaries put into place. Because they are so cute, they can easily get away with bad behavior unless you have a training program ready from Day One.

Cairn Terriers are intelligent and curious, so they will be keen to see which new methods you present to them. They can learn commands easily and are highly intuitive, tuning into people’s moods and emotions. Positive reinforcement and patience are the keys to a successful time training your Cairn Terrier puppy.

You have probably fallen in love with the Cairn Terrier’s independence and can see how this trait fosters curiosity and exploration in these puppies. However, this same independence can turn into stubbornness during training. Cairn Terrier puppy owners know that “If you give a Cairn an inch, he won’t take a mile; he’ll take 100 miles” regarding the assertive nature of Cairn Terriers.

You should prioritize working on the “Come” command when teaching recall, but know they have a very strong prey drive. If they catch a scent or sound, they can take off and cover great distances despite their small size.

Training a Cairn Terrier to walk on a leash nicely can also be a challenge. They can be quite independent and want to explore, ignoring leash manners and a proper, calm walking experience. They are easily distracted because they’re always looking for the next exciting thing. You’ll have to work hard to gain their attention, so keeping things fresh and fun is key to getting a Cairn Terrier puppy to pay attention.

While you will love your Cairn Terrier, you may also be baffled by how to channel their feisty traits to avoid frustration. Here are some suggestions for how to turn perceived undesirable behaviors of Cairn Terrier puppies into productive ones.

A Cairn Terrier will “tell” you all about it

Like most Terrier breeds, Cairn Terriers display a wide range of vocalizations via barks, yips, growls, and even a noise called the “death scream” they make when excited. They aren’t afraid to let their voices be heard! Cairn Terriers are always alert and observant and will bark to let you know of something suspicious.

Early socialization will help reduce the frequency of excessive barking in your puppy. The more people, sights, sounds, and experiences they’re exposed to as young as possible, the less startled and suspicious they will become of an unfamiliar situation.

Keep them active

Cairn Terrier puppies love to play with anyone they can find! These little dogs can stay busy playing fetch, solving puzzles, or going on outings with you. They need about 30 minutes of intentional exercise a day but stay quite active throughout the day. Mental stimulation is crucial for providing opportunities to exercise their brains – and for staying out of trouble. Cairn Terriers who have their needs met are much better behaved and reduce the propensity for behavior stemming from boredom or anxiety. Remember, a tired Cairn Terrier is a happy Cairn Terrier!

Can you dig it? A Cairn Terrier can

Cairn Terriers are hardwired to dig, and owners need to be prepared for how strong this trait can be. Rather than fight it, embrace it! It’s a great idea to acknowledge this strong drive and set up a dig box for them outside where you have special toys you bury and hide. If you don’t want your Cairn Terrier to get dirty, build a DIY dig box for your dog at home using paper, soft cloth, plastic play pit balls, or other non-messy materials to keep them busy digging for treasure. It’s a great way to give them a mentally stimulating opportunity while honoring their instincts in a productive, directed way.

Earthdog trials

A Cairn Terrier’s prey drive can be so strong that they get tunnel vision, shutting out all other distractions and focusing on the sound or scent. Earthdog trials are a great way to honor their vermin hunting instinct in a controlled, fun environment.

Also called earthdog tests, earthdog sports for dogs is a non-competitive activity where the dog is encouraged to follow a series of human-constructed tunnels chasing after a rat’s scent (called the quarry). No rats are harmed, and the sport taps into the Cairn Terrier’s innate ability to track vermin just like they did on the windy highlands. When a Cairn Terrier exhibits any active behavior like pawing, digging, staring, or more for a set amount of time, the dog has completed the earthdog test.

With the proper amount of exercise and training, living with a Cairn Terrier puppy can be a fun experience as you admire their bold, active spirits.

Where Can I Find Cairn Terrier Puppies?

If you’ve fallen in love with the spunky Cairn Terrier, it’s time to find a puppy! But where can you find one?

To find a Cairn Terrier puppy to call your own, you may turn to shelters or rescues, but you may not find a purebred Cairn Terrier. Adoptions often have long lists for one dog, or you won’t meet all the strict criteria despite being ready to become a responsible Cairn Terrier puppy owner. If you look at pet stores, you run the risk of supporting puppy mills. And lastly, buying a dog off a social media post is a puppy scammer’s dream.
