The pitter-patter of little puppy paws (or huge puppy paws depending on your breed) are music to our ears! Healthy paws allow puppies to play and frolic in the sunshine to their heart’s content. An injured puppy's paw can directly affect his quality of life.

We want to keep our puppies as healthy as possible. You’ve looked into how to choose a trustworthy veterinarian for your puppy and have taken him to all his well visits. Everything looks great!

As responsible puppy owners, we want to ensure their well-being from the tip of their noses to the ends of their wagging tails. One area we may not consider regarding your puppy’s health is educating ourselves about all the possible (or shall we say, pawsible) paw problems in puppies

It’s great to be aware of how you can be prepared to care for your puppy’s paws, both preventatively and in a triage situation until you can have those paws checked out at the vet.

Take a look at our 15 recommendations for dog paw care products that will help you know how to properly care for your dog’s paws

Preventing Puppy Paw Problems

Fortunately, several products we’ll recommend are used to prevent any paw issues from happening in the first place. Make using these part of your daily routine for your puppy and when doing quick health checks.

You can also anticipate needing to give extra paw care when you are going on outside adventures where there is rugged, rough terrain, potentially hazardous materials your puppy may walk through, search and rescue missions, or in inclement weather to help protect their paws from less-than-ideal conditions. If you participate in these activities, it’s worth it to learn how to train your dog to wear dog booties for extra protection.

Why You Need to Clip Your Puppy’s Nails

Neglecting to trim your puppy’s nails regularly can lead to a variety of issues for your pup, including painful ingrown nails, which can cause discomfort and even infections if left untreated. Overgrown nails can also affect your puppy's gait, making it more challenging to walk and jump, which can ultimately cause joint pain and other problems. It's essential to stay on top of nail clipping to avoid these potential complications and ensure your pup's paws are in tip-top shape.

The best thing you can do for your puppy’s need for nail trimming is to start as early as possible. Begin by touching and holding their paws, massaging their paw pads, and feeling in between their little puppy toes. Early exposure to having their paws handled will have you and your groomer thanking you for all that hard work early on when they visit for nail clipping!

Another easy thing to do when they are young is to get them used to the noise and sensation of having their nails trimmed, either with manual clippers or an electric tool like a Dremel. These products are absolutely necessary for your puppy’s foot health, but some dogs and older puppies experience fear and stress when they are not exposed to this experience early on.

If you want to try your hand at DIY grooming for your puppy, select the right nail-trimming tool you’re comfortable with. Have an expert show you or watch videos until you are ready to try it yourself. It can be nerve-wracking the first few times, but you’ll become a pro in no time.

Part of trimming your puppy’s nails yourself is you want to be prepared if you accidentally cut the quick, the area behind the appropriate cut line containing nerves and a blood vessel that helps your puppy feel sensations. We’ll warn you that it will bleed bright red blood for quite a bit and may scare you, but we’ve got a product you can keep on hand in case you nick the quick accidentally.

The Importance of Keeping a Well-Stocked Dog First Aid Kit For Puppy Paws

When raising puppies, we will gather all our items and organize your pet supplies, placing any items we may need in a secure location that’s within arm’s reach for quick access. Keeping an organized space for pet supplies will help you get to your dog's first aid kit and know what you’ll need to restock for next time.

One of these items that is non-negotiable is having a dog first aid kit well stocked and ready to be used in any emergency situation. Whether you build a DIY dog first aid kit or buy a commercially available one in pet stores, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you can provide immediate attention to any issues your dog may experience with his paws. These items can be used to treat minor cuts, burns, scrapes, blisters, or irritation.
