Two french bulldogs have Happy New Year and Cheers headbands on

3…2…1! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Fireworks are going off, pots and pans are banging, balloons and ticker tape are floating, and people are smooching as the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve. Many of us have high hopes for the upcoming year, eager to shed the previous year and leave it behind.

Many people make New Year’s Resolutions, so why shouldn’t dogs? Whether serious or silly, here are some New Year’s Resolutions for dogs and dog breeds that will make you wonder what resolution your dog would make.

New Year’s Resolutions For Dog Breeds

Each dog breed has characteristics that make them uniquely endearing. While these qualities can be amazing, they can also be amazingly naughty or hilarious.

Siberian Husky: Stop the backtalk

Siberian Husky puppies for sale are beautiful, self-assured dogs that have a special talent – they “talk” to their owners. And boy do they let them know exactly what they are thinking and feeling!

In addition to barking, Siberian Huskies make a variety of noises, including howling, growling, yipping, and “singing.” If you’re looking for a quiet lap dog, the Siberian Husky is not the best choice for you! However, maybe they will learn to be less dramatic in 2024 and resolve to be more polite and keep their opinions to themselves for once!

Bernese Mountain Dog: Take more time off from the kids

Bernese Mountain Dog puppies for sale may grow to be over 115 pounds, but they’re mellow, gentle giants at heart. As one of the best family dog breeds, Bernese Mountain Dogs have a reputation for being a kid’s best friend. They have a soft spot for children and guard them without being aggressive. This watchful breed provides a calm demeanor amidst boisterous, raucous kids and also joins in on the fun without being too hyper.

However, even the most dedicated nanny dog needs some time off away from the kids once in a while. In their free time, these confident, easy-going dogs love to tap into their working dog history and have some fun pulling carts or frolicking around in the snow.

Bichon Frise: Join the circus

While the appeal of the Big Top has waned over the years, a solid circus performance always puts a smile on people’s faces. If you have a Bichon Frise puppy, you already know they are the official Ringmaster of your family. Why not put their peppy enthusiasm to good use and tap into their historic routes as circus performers?

Before they were bred primarily as companions, these little toy dogs roamed the streets after the downfall of nobility in the French Revolution. People began training these eager dogs and drew large crowds wowing people with their feats, such as walking on their hind legs, turning somersaults, and more. Soon, Bichon Frises enjoyed the spotlight as French canine street performers in traveling circuses.

You can teach your dog fun party tricks or take your Bichon Frise to a professional dog trainer to impress your friends and family. You can also get them involved in canine dog sports to work on other training skills while bonding.

Golden Retriever: Stop being overly friendly all the time

In addition to truly being Man’s Best Friend, the family-friendly Golden Retriever oddly enough has the loudest bark by a dog at 113dB according to the Guinness Book of World Records. One would assume the loudest bark would pair well with the best family guard dog, but quite the opposite is true. Sometimes a Golden Retriever needs to back up its bark and stop seeing everyone as a potential best friend.

This Golden Retriever didn’t even bother barking at a California thief trying to steal the family’s bike right out of their garage. Not even the robber could resist a Golden’s incredibly welcoming nature regardless of who they were or what they were up to. These owners were eventually reunited with the stolen electric bike with no thanks to their Golden!

Chihuahua: Finally realize its true size

A Chihuahua puppy is the smallest dog in the world, weighing no more than 6 pounds and standing 5-8 inches tall. Their portable nature makes them a great fit for people living in apartments or those who like to travel with their pets.

However, their hearts and personalities are larger than life because Chihuahuas truly believe they are giant dogs with their bold attitudes and loud bark. They have not one bone of shyness in them and will hang with the big dogs at the dog park, excitedly letting them know their opinions on the games being played. Perhaps 2024 will be the year the Chihuahua learns its true size, but we’re not holding our breaths!

Border Collie: Stop hanging out with sheep all the time

A Border Collie’s life can be all work and not enough play as a sheepdog on a ranch to a human, but they think they’re playing the whole time. Border Collie puppies are incredibly hard workers and have infinite energy levels. Considered the smartest dog breed on the planet, Border Collies are easily trained with a series of commands their handlers teach them. It’s mesmerizing to watch Border Collies shepherd hundreds of sheep with just a few different whistles and hand movements.

When not corralling sheep, Border Collies are excellent at a variety of dog sports. They consistently shine in agility, flyball, frisbee, and dock diving competitions – anything where they can show off their amazing athleticism and have fun in the process.

Bulldog: Let other dog breeds be sports mascots

Bulldogs have a reputation for being courageous and loyal, making them an excellent choice for a sports team’s mascot. In fact, more sports organizations have a Bulldog as a mascot than any other type of mascot. A Bulldog puppy by nature remains calm in a variety of situations and is a good reminder to sports fans to do the same, even when their team is losing.

While Bulldogs are friendly and welcoming, they also mean business when it’s time to get the job done. Perhaps some other dog breeds would like to have the honor of being top dog, especially a Siberian Husky, which comes in as the #2 most popular dog breed for a mascot.

These Dogs Need New Year’s Resolutions

We’ve covered which resolutions are suitable for dog breeds, but how about for these special dogs? Each one has a particular quality that lends itself to ambition, changes in habits, and more. Which one stands out to you?

Milo the Cocker Spaniel: Open a doggy hair salon business

Cocker Spaniel puppies for sale are known for the lush hair that covers their long, velvety ears. In addition to their charm, those long ears trap scents when Cocker Spaniels were used primarily for hunting. Owner Jayone decided to do something special with her English Cocker Spaniel Milo’s hair growing on his head.

From space buns to bubble braids, Jayone has had fun learning different ways to style Milo’s abundant hair. At first, she wasn’t sure how to groom him, so she learned some DIY dog grooming tips. Jayone’s techniques improved quickly because Milo was a willing participant. Milo’s grooming routine involves a bath with shampoo, conditioner, coconut oil, and a blowout. Each night, she brushes his teeth, wipes his paws, and puts balm on his paw pads to keep them supple. He also gets a good scalp massage after his hairdo is taken out. The English Cocker Spaniel seems to love this special bonding time and would be a fantastic model for a doggy hair salon business in 2024.

Bentley the St. Bernard: Be prepared when shopping

The St. Bernard dog breed is known for traversing harsh weather conditions to rescue stranded travelers from avalanches, but nowhere in the lore does it mention seeking out great bargains. Bentley the 135-pound St. Bernard wandered into a local dollar store and refused to leave. Customers and workers could tell right away that he was a friendly dog belonging to a family.

Thankfully, Bentley’s owners knew the importance of microchipping their puppy in case he decided to go shopping. Authorities were able to reunite the wandering explorer with his family. Instead of carrying a barrel of brandy, the owners should train Bentley to grab a little backpack and a list for the next time he wants to find some sweet deals.

Chico the Gerberian Shepsky: Apply to be a K9 partner the correct way

Police officers at the Odessa Police Department had a special visitor in between monitoring community safety. Chico the enthusiastic 1-year-old  Gerberian Shepsky caused a ruckus at the police station when he ran away from home for quite the adventure. While most criminals run from cops, Chico broke his house rules and ran a mile straight into the station. Chico’s owner Edward notes that while he looks like an intimidating wolf, he doesn’t take life too seriously and “fails” as a guard dog for their family store due to his friendly nature. Officers joked that next time, Chico should go through the proper channels to join the K9 unit.

Remi the Hound and Bomber the Papillon: No more calling 911 with false emergencies

A dog’s owner going to work does not constitute a true animal emergency despite what our dogs might think. However, Remi the Hound and Bomber the Papillon deemed that very scenario a dire situation and decided to seek help.

These naughty dogs from Lakeville, MN called 911 a whopping 16 times in just 30 minutes. Officers responded and were able to contact the owner to enter the home. Once inside, they found the dogs were tapping their paws on a cell phone calling the emergency number. Hopefully, they will not have to dial 911 for real in 2024, but at least they know how to do so!
