Auggie: About the Breed
An Auggie is a relatively new breed originating in the United States. It is a cross between two purebred dog breeds, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Miniature Australian Shepherd, both of which have long histories as working dogs. Auggies began appearing in the 2000s as a cross aiming to create a dog that was smaller and more adaptable than the Australian Shepherd while still possessing the herding instincts and intelligence of both parent breeds.
Today, Auggies have quickly gained popularity as family pets and companion dogs due to their friendly personality and adorable appearance. Find out what it's like to own an Auggie puppy when considering its characteristics, activity level, disposition, training, and grooming needs.
Characteristics
An Auggie is, in professional terms, so stinkin' adorable. With the perky, oversize Corgi ears sitting on top of their heads to their beautiful coats, an Auggie puppy is sure to turn heads. They always seem to have a smile on their faces! An Auggie is usually tri-colored but can be any combination of black, tan, white, or brown.
Like their Corgi parents, Auggies have long bodies that are low to the ground. They are medium-sized dogs and weigh anywhere from 20-30 lbs. and stand 10-13 inches tall.
Activity Level
If you're wondering if an Auggie loves to play, then you'd be more than correct! They are always, and we mean always up for a good time. An Auggie puppy is lively and energetic. As a working dog breed, Auggies do best when they're given a "job" to do, whether that is keeping them busy with a puzzle toy or playing lots of fetch games, and we mean lots!
An Auggie will need a family with an active lifestyle that can provide for an Auggie puppy's high-energy needs. Ever vigilant, they will alert you if something is amiss. They may not be a great choice for small living quarters, as they are herding dogs after all, and love to zoom around with lots of open space. This breed is also no couch potato, so an Auggie cuddling up for hours during a movie marathon is a rare sight due to their high energy levels.
Disposition
Auggies know no strangers due to their friendly, affectionate personalities. They are always ready for a good time and will keep you on their toes with their enthusiasm for activities. It's hard to have a bad day around an Auggie due to its happy-go-lucky personality and ability to pull you out of a funk.
An Auggie puppy would make a wonderful, spunky playmate for a family with children. They may be a little shy around strangers, but with reassurance, an Auggie is a friend to all.
Training
You'll be happy to find out Auggies are very easy to train and enjoy special dog sports outside of a regular training regiment. Due to their inherited intelligence from both parent breeds, Auggies love to please their owners and will work hard for treats and praise.
One thing you'll love to do with your Auggie puppy is to put them in canine sports as a partner activity to do together. Whether you do field work, obstacle courses, dock diving, or herding exercises, an Auggie will thrive at activities requiring physical endurance, agility, and intelligence.
Whether you take on extra training activities with your Auggie or not, it's important to socialize and train your Auggie as soon as possible. If not trained properly, they can nip at the heels of children and adults to try to "round them up" like livestock. If you don't provide them with enough stimulation, they can be destructive when trying to entertain themselves.
Grooming Needs & Care
An Auggie has a beautiful silky coat that sheds moderately throughout the year. However, come spring and fall typically, an Auggie will blow its coat in heavy shedding sessions.
Regular coat brushing and bathing will help keep your Auggie's coat healthy and glossy. Unless they get exceptionally dirty having fun in the field, an Auggie puppy will only need baths a few times a year. It's important to keep up with nail trimming, dental cleanings, and eye and ear maintenance as well to prevent health issues.
These dogs are small to medium in size and have a friendly and energetic personality. Auggies are known for their intelligence, agility, and loyalty to their owners.
Auggies are great companions for families with children and other pets, and they are adaptable to various living conditions, from apartments to larger homes with yards.
