About the Breed

Pomsky: About the Breed

A Pomsky is a combination of a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian or any variation of 2 Pomskies mixed with another Pomsky or Pomeranian. Pomskies originate from the United States, with the first litter born in 2012, and they have become increasingly popular in recent years, enjoying the accolade of Most Popular Designer Dog of 2017. They are adorable, energetic, and loving fluffballs that are easy to melt your heart!

If you are considering getting a Pomsky, be sure to do your research. These dogs can be a lot of work, but they can also be incredibly rewarding. With the right training and care, Pomskies can make wonderful companion animals.

You'll want to learn all about their characteristics, activity level, disposition, grooming requirements, and training needs.

Characteristics

The size of a Pomsky is determined by genetics, and they grow 12-15 inches tall and can weigh up to 30 lbs. They resemble a little spitz-type dog with a thick, silky double coat, pointy ears, broad shoulders, a muscular body, and a furry, bushy tail.

You'll see their beautiful coats can usually be a mixture of brown, white, cream, gray, fawn, pied, or black, and all puppies typically sport the Siberian mask-and-cap pattern of white markings. A Pomsky puppy's eyes can be the same or different colors, featuring blue, hazel, brown, or amber colors.

Activity Level

A Pomsky may be cute, but there are some things you need to know before you buy a Husky-Pomeranian. Pomsky puppies love to play and are very high-energy, so being paired with an active family is an ideal living situation. They require a fair amount of exercise, so they are not the best choice for someone who is looking for a low-maintenance pet. You must keep a Pomsky puppy busy both physically and mentally; otherwise, they may demonstrate destructive behavior because they are bored.

Disposition

Pomskies are sociable, friendly, smart, and enthusiastic. You'll always know when someone is coming because they like to alert their owners to anything out of their ordinary routine, making them excellent guard dogs.

Pomskies do well with older children who do not irritate or aggravate them, as they can show their dislike if not socialized. Once a bond is formed, though, they are devout dogs.

It's also worth mentioning that when researching Pomskies, they have a playful and curious temperament, which can sometimes lead to mischievous behavior if they don't receive enough quality attention and stimulation from their owner. However, with proper socialization and training, Pomskies will quickly become true family members: loyal, affectionate, and always eager to please.

Grooming Needs & Care

Pomskies are relatively easy to groom, but they do shed a lot! Their double coats shed year-round, so it's important to brush them regularly to prevent knots and skin conditions. It's a good idea to trim their fur and get their nails clipped every 6-8 weeks. Given their close relation to Huskies and Pomeranians, vigilant grooming is essential to maintain the dog's health and to prevent your house from becoming overwhelmed with dog hair.

Because a Pomsky can be prone to ear, eye, and dental problems, keeping excellent puppy hygiene will help keep your Pomsky puppy healthy.

Training

Because a Pomsky is extremely intelligent, it will be easy to train. Pomskies need proper socialization; and constant attention. They have a tendency to try to be the boss of the household, so it's extremely important to spend lots of time demonstrating and reinforcing desired behaviors. Even though a Pomsky puppy in training can get sassy sometimes, you'll want to use positive training methods because they do not respond well to harsh words.

It's important to remember that a training program is an ongoing process with Pomskies due to their intelligence and stubbornness. As such, consistency is key in reinforcing desired behaviors and discouraging unwanted ones. If you start performing training sessions full of positive reinforcement and patience, you'll find that your Pomsky puppy will be eager to follow commands.
