Saint Bernard Puppies for Sale: About the Breed
You may recognize the Saint Bernard as the large, furry breed that wears a little barrel of brandy around their necks to rescue stranded people in the Swiss Alps. Perhaps you also recognize a Saint Bernard as the dog breed starring in the movie "Beethoven." While some Saint Bernards still do search and rescue missions, the breed today is known as a devoted family dog. Find out what it's like to live with the characteristics, activity levels, disposition, training, and grooming when owning a St. Bernard.
Characteristics
A Saint Bernard is unmistakably large with its powerful, blocky body, deep chest, huge, round head, soft brown eyes, loose jowls, and pink tongue rolling out of its mouth like a red carpet. A St. Bernard may have a short or long double coat that comes in many colors, such as brown and white, white and brindle, or red and white with or without a mask. St. Bernards can grow to be up to 180 lbs and 30" at the shoulder!
Activity Level
You may assume they need high levels of energy due to their search-and-rescue background. While you would be correct that they have lots of stamina and strong muscles, St. Bernards only need a medium amount of exercise. Saint Bernards are easygoing and want to do what you're doing. If that's going for a walk, great! If you're watching your favorite streaming series, they'll be right by your side, thinking they're a lap dog.
Disposition
A Saint Bernard's disposition is one of the characteristics that make it such a great family pet. They are gentle, loving, and patient with children's boisterous nature. They are usually calm and laid back but can also be playful when the time calls for it. St. Bernards are not big barkers but will let you know when there is something of interest going on. A Saint Bernard's easygoing, flexible, and adaptable nature makes it a great companion for those who have room for it!
A St. Bernard can be stubborn and headstrong but never aggressive or territorial. It's important to note that a Saint Bernard may experience separation anxiety when you are gone for long periods of time, so make sure they are mentally stimulated in a safe space to reduce any tendencies of destruction.
Training
A St. Bernard won't need a lot of intensive training like other breeds, but it will still need the basics. Due to their size, they can easily knock over an entire coffee table's contents with a swish of their tail and may enjoy counter-surfing for some tasty morsels, so they do need to learn how to behave. St. Bernards are also known to be quite intelligent and easy to train. In fact, several Saint Bernards enjoy status as comfort and therapy dogs due to their cuddly, calm nature.
Grooming Needs & Care
When you live with a St. Bernard, you will quickly realize their double coat sheds a lot! Daily maintenance brushing is crucial, and a deeper brushing session once a week will help remove loose hairs and dirt and prevent matting.
Saint Bernards also drool heavily, so keep a cloth handy to wipe their mouths. Make sure to practice regular dental hygiene and keep up with nail and paw care. You may opt to take them to a professional groomer for services due to their enormous size or inability to groom them at home.
