Finding a breed standard

In 1925, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi made its debut in exhibitions overseen by the Kennel Club in Great Britain. However, a notable drawback occurred, as the Kennel Club did not distinguish Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgis as separate breeds, registering them as a single breed (more on the difference later). This led to the possibility of crossbreeding between the two types.

Consequently, enthusiasts of both breeds faced significant challenges at dog shows, as judges exhibited preferences for one breed over the other, resulting in widespread dissatisfaction. Eventually, in 1934, the Kennel Club officially recognized and differentiated the two breeds.

How Many Types of Corgis Are There?

When we say “Corgi,” you are probably thinking of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. But did you know there are two other types of Corgis that you may not know about? We’ll briefly describe the different types to give you a better understanding of the Corgi world.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi

Did you know the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is an entirely different breed than a Pembroke Welsh Corgi? They do share the name “Corgi,” but we learned earlier it means “dwarf dog” in Welsh. There’s another long dog in town…er, we mean country!

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is from a different part of the country and is around 2,000 years older than the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. They trace their roots back to Cardiganshire, Wales, where they played a vital role in herding livestock across challenging, rugged terrains. Interestingly enough, Cardigan Welsh Corgis share a common lineage with Dachshunds, as both breeds descended from the German Teckel lineage.

A gorgeous Pawrade Cardigan Welsh Corgi

There are some notable differences between the breeds. Cardigan Welsh Corgi puppies are a bit heavier when fully grown and boast an adorable long fox-like tail on their sloping rear ends – something you won't find on a Pembroke. Their ears are also a bit different than a Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s and are more round atop a larger head.

When compared to their Pembroke counterparts, a Cardigan Welsh Corgi puppy generally exhibits a more laid-back demeanor. They tend to approach situations with a relaxed and observant attitude, rather than displaying high-energy tendencies. While still an active and alert breed, Cardigan Welsh Corgis have a reputation for being a bit calmer and less hyperactive than Pembroke Welsh Corgis.

American Corgi

An American Corgi is a crossbreed of Pembroke Welsh Corgis and Cardigan Welsh Corgis. They are usually merle instead of bi- or tri-colored, but genetics plays a large role in both appearance and personality. American Corgis are considered a designer dog breed since they are not purebred dogs – but that doesn’t affect their cuteness and spunky personalities! They are still Corgis, after all!
